ROM Hacks: Chrono Trigger Redux
« on: February 07, 2007, 10:30:20 am »

Update By: DarknessSavior

Hiya everyone, DarknessSavior here. I have officially released a very preliminary patch for my Chrono Trigger project, titled "Chrono Trigger Redux" (a name that will probably wind up changing in the future).

Basically, what this patch does is change many of the item/tech names and descriptions so that they will be as close to the original Japanese version as possible.

In terms of descriptions, most of those are ad libbed on my part, because the Japanese version doesn't have many, and the ones they do have, I can't read. But, I tried to make them relate to the item or technique in question as much as possible.

You can find a copy of the patch here.

Eh? I just used ZSNES' snapshot feature, but I did change them to jpg afterwards. o.O

Is there any way I can have this moved to translations? Everything I changed (aside from the descriptions) is based off of two translations I've seen.

ZSNES lets you choose what format you take screenshots in. Tried hitting 'enter' on the last item of the F1 menu?

Eh, I haven't messed around with screenshots in ZSNES before, but thanks. In the future I'll check that out. =D

So you stole them? The hack won't be moved.

Eh, let me be a bit more descriptive. It's based off of two translation DOCUMENTS (not actual hacks) that I have, I found them on GameFAQs.com, and I cited them in my readme.

Plus, the only reason I even used those to begin with, is so that I would be hacking in something relatively close to the original, instead of what I think.

I understand now. Just read the message Nightcrawler sent me. Nevermind. Until I finish the whole thing, it can stay a hack. =D

It will probably always be a hack.

Staff is in full agreement that this is not a translation. You yourself say on the news that you 'ad libbed' descriptions. You can't read any of the Japanese. Your patch is for the ENGLISH ROM.

This is in no way a Translation of any kind. Nothing is being translated...

Yes, but I have also mentioned various times that I plan on moving to the Japanese ROM, once I can get a translator on board to the project. The hack I just did on the English ROM was just to show that I am capable of hacking/editing (even though I used a tool for the English version, I could have very easily done it by hand), and hopefully to get someone interested.

Eventually, the Japanese ROM will be used, the translated scripts I have will be thrown out in favor of the newly translated script. Etc, etc.

Sorry for all the confusion this has caused, I need to be a bit more descriptive. -.-

To be fair, your news post didn't say anything about any plans for the Japanese version. Your thread might have but your news didn't and that was what was used to judge the patch.

At which time we'll consider it as an actual translation. ;)

Quite true, but it IS in the readme for my patch. Is there a way I can edit my news submission to include that part? -.-

Whee, more pointless retranslation of games which already have stellar translations of their own.

I never said CT had a bad translation. I do know that ALOT of things were taken out because the strings were huge, and that Nintendo had Square censor things. That's basically what my project seeks to do: Add the stuff taken out for space reasons, and uncensor the script. =D

That is freaking hilarious. CT, by no means whatsoever had a 'stellar' translation. It was and still kinda is 'good enough'. I am not getting into an argument over this, however.

If someone has a lot of free time coming up, the Chrono Trigger Retranslation (script only) will debut...before the summer (depends on how much time I have to arrange it, as I expect the hard translating to be done before March ends; KW rules). But I certainly won't have enough time to use Chronotools to make a playable ROM, so we're going to have to find someone to do that.

Cidolfas, if you're still here, the Compendium's looking for simple, practical ways to encourage support for the development of a new Chrono game. However, someone's proposed the ambitious of idea of getting some kind of stall at a con and handing out fliers and letters (sounds obsessive, doesn't it?). Would that even be remotely feasible?

Hmm... well, maybe it was nostalgia talking, but I certainly found it entertaining. 8-)

Don't ask me about cons, I've never been to one in my life. If you're going to set up a stall, try making a petition - a real one, not those silly Internet ones that no one ever pays attention to.
