ROM Hacks: Rosy Robot Raises a Ruckus!
« on: September 26, 2019, 09:07:24 am »

Update By: Josephine Lithius

In an undisclosed location of an unknown world… a robot was created in the shape of a lovely, human girl was created by unseen masters for the sole purpose of creating piles-and-piles of explosives.  This robot wore a pink dress, pink gloves, and a pink helmet with a golden heart on the forehead.  These traits quickly earned her a nickname among her peers: "Pretty Bomber."

From day one, Pretty Bomber found her given task a bit boring.  Being a creative construct, however, she would often find ways to turn her tedious tasks into a fun games.  Some days, she timed herself, trying to beat her record for quickest bomb quota production.  Other days, she amused herself by stacking the objects in piles of varying shapes.  Eventually, though she grew bored of bomb production and wanted to do something else.  On top of that, she was starting to get ideas… have dreams… but alas, she knew she was a robot that was made for one very dreary purpose, and nothing she could do would ever change that.  Or, so she thought.

One day while on the assembly line, the humanoid robot overheard two of her co-workers chatting about rumors.  Supposedly, robots who went to the surface never came back.  When one asked the other "why," the answer excited her.

They became human.

The idea of turning into a real girl and never having to make another bomb made her shift pass by very quickly and, that very night when she should have been sleeping… she slipped out of her recharge unit, slid by the sentries, and made a break for freedom!

Rushing through the corridors, Pretty Bomber kept her mind focused and her hopes high.  On her way through the factory, however, she bumped into some unexpected fellows.  The same people who had spoken of those magical rumors were wide-awake and working the late-night shift.  When they noticed her, they asked what she was doing, so she explained her situation and asked if they wanted to come with her.  It didn't surprise her when they declined, but… she was utterly shocked when they began to make threats and approach her.  It seemed like they were determined to keep her in the factory!  Unfortunately for them… Pretty Bomber was far more determined to escape!

With a newfound fire guiding her actions, she concentrated, forming a heart-shaped bomb in her hands.  Then, as she broke through the assembly line, she left the explosive behind… with fuse alight!

A powerful explosion rocked the factory, immediately followed by alarms blaring and lights flashing.  With that single act of defiance… Pretty Bomber found herself fighting for her life in a desperate bid to leave her old life behind and follow her heart's desires.

Did she ever make it to the surface?  Were the rumors about becoming a human true?  Find out the answers to these questions and more… by playing Bomberman™, Starring Pretty Bomber™! (Now available from this very website!)

Perhaps someone should point out that this robot character is not to be confused with Rosie the Robot from The Jetsons.

I think they are making a reference to "Rosy the Riveter" Who was a fictional female factory worker on propaganda posters during world war two.

I'll let you in on a little secret…

… I just couldn't think of enough P-words to make a catchy headline, so I went with "Rosy" instead of "Pink."
I'm not that hard to find... if you know where to look.

I think it would have been nicer if the news article, instead of this:

A new sprite hack of Bomberman has been released.

And leave the original wall of text for the readme file, in case anyone interested in the hack wants to read it.

Agree with above, but would go further. Shallow gender-swap sprite hacks shouldn't be on the front page space.

You people have no idea what you're talking about. Irrespective of the content or depth of the hack itself - to which I can't speak, I haven't played it - I clicked over here to say this:

THAT is how you write a release announcement!
Ongoing project: "Final Fantasy IV: A Threat From Within"

Thank you, chillyfeez.  That whole thing was written to get peoples' attention and get them interested in the hack.
Yes, it ultimately leads people to what some might consider a "disappointing character swap" rather than, say, a translation of a years-old game or a complete redesign of a beloved classic… but, sometimes, a little "razzle-dazzle" is a good thing when you're trying to "sell" something to a wide audience.  I mean, I made the hack for fun.  In that same vein, I much prefer adverts with a little character rather than a simple statement.  Kind of a shame the feeling isn't mutual.  Now I know~

Also…
Shallow gender-swap sprite hacks
Let's be realistic, here…  Aren't all ROM hacks "shallow" in some way?  I mean… why do we modify games?  To suit our tastes?  To make them "better?"

We ROM hackers are an arrogant, selfish, shallow lot, to be sure~  ;)

No, not all ROM hacks are shallow. Would you say the same of Super Demo World? Of Crimson Echoes? How about Parallel Worlds, or Super Metroid Project Base?

A common thread throughout these suggestions is the changing of level data, to create a new mechanical experience. A graphics hack, which changes nothing but graphics, especially one in a game without compressed graphics, is objectively less interesting than a hack that gives you new things to do in games you already love playing. Of course, there will be people who care about that, and people who don't, but in my opinion, the people who do care about it should at least be heard and have their complaints considered.
