Jungle Wars 2 (help deciphering some characters)
« on: July 23, 2020, 05:58:48 pm »
Hi everyone, hope you're doing ok.

I'm making a table file for Jungle Wars 2, with the purpose of extracting the whole script and playing that game "kanjifying" it and machine-translating it via DeepL (more or less the same method I'm using with the first Jungle Wars translation).

I have almost completed the table, but there a few characters (two kanji and a strange symbol) that I'm not sure about

The first one I think it's the "zu" in "chizu" (図) and the second seem to be the one for "rank" (位). Then there's the char 0 I've put on purpose, and I can't identify the last one, which looks like the hiragana "ku" but has something else to the left. I don't know if it's a kanji, a symbol, or just some useless data. The position in the table file for those three characters are A3, AF and B5.

I'd appreciate if anyone could give me a hand here. Thanks.

Oh, by the way, here's the table (I think everything's complete unless I've screwed it up somewhere):

You're right that it's not just "く". It's half of "りょく”.

See attached tileset taken from No$sns VRAM viewer.

The first could be something I've seen when studying Chinese, 凶 ("kyou" in Japanese), meaning (among others) "bad luck" or "evil".

That's right! Now I understand why there was another strange character that looked like it said "ryo" but seemed to be slightly cut from the right. How strange that they decided to put that word into two parts instead of using the characters ri, small o and ku. But I recall having seen that word used in the status screen, so perhaps it was done that way due to space constraints in that screen.

The first could be something I've seen when studying Chinese, 凶 ("kyou" in Japanese), meaning (among others) "bad luck" or "evil".

Yes, that one fits a lot better than the "zu" kanji, which was the most similar one that I managed to find (I'm not very skilled yet at finding kanji).

Thanks a lot. I think I have the table file complete now, apart from one or two mistakes I've just found while proofreading it. Time to check if I can find whole sentences in a hex editor by using that table.
