GUNNM - Martian Memory - Translation

PSX game: GUNNM - Martian Memory
(aka Battle Angel Alita )

Hi there, ^Ripper here from rippersanime.info.
Since i made a "wanted ad" i should post the project here as well.

Well, we are currently working on translating this playstation game into English.
Work has started quite some time ago by me due to a suggestion of a user on my forum.
He was also working on the full translation of the game, but has since dissapeared.

After finding out the game COULD be patched i started to write the tools to do so.
For best results, i wrote them in PHP since that is the best way to re-write binary files anyway. *cough*
And here we are...

The main script editing tool:

The ePSXe emulator with a scene jumper program for testing translations imported into the ISO.

For demo's of all the tools please visit: https://forum.rippersanime.info/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1106

Currently the tools are mostly done and translation has begun.
Scripts can be extracted, modified and reinserted without problems.

Menu texts are still a bit of a pain because of the limited text space in the binary.
Still working on it, but due to lack of programming knowledge it is going slow.

Via the "wanted ad" page i got a response to aid in the translations.
So at this time the project has 1 translator.
However we are looking for more people interested in translating the in-game texts.

For more info on the project, our main forum is at https://forum.rippersanime.info/viewforum.php?f=10

I'm so hyped that anyone would be tackling this game but wow, the man himself! I used to frequent your site all the time. I just wish I had any connections to help signal boost this because I've been wanting to play it for a long, long time. Best of luck!!

Oh my God I thought I'd never see this translated into English ever! Kudos! Any chance you might make an alternative patch using the names from the Viz Media/Manga Entertainment translation?

Some news :)

Well the technically part of translating the texts is going slow but good.
I managed to find a lot of code that could easily be changed to fit the new translations.
The menu's should be working nicely now.

Translationwise we are still looking for volunteers.
Our main translator has resigned, so i have put up the wanted ad again.

Another update to my project.

I've released another version of the game today.

Lots of work on the menu's have been done, and with only a few cosmetic things left, all should work up to the motorball arc.
Texts have also been translated up to the motorball, but not in the way you might expect.

With the project being stale due to lack of translators I've resorted to machine translations by deepl.
This gives much better results then google translate and actually makes it readable.
Still its not the most optimal route i know, but its either that or scrapping the project.

I've released 2 versions this time.
1 normal and 1 debug version.
The debug version dumps both versions of the texts on screen and shows in what file / entry the texts reside.
This makes it easy for people to compare both the texts in-game.

I'm still looking for people to help with this project.
If you have any time to help with refining the current translations then you are more then welcome!

Did not know about this game, but looks great! And these translation tools look so nice!

Will you have to manually do screenshots for the script editing tool? This sort of makes me want to transition my pure YAML solution into a web interface for my own project, although with it being a simple GB game, I am not sure if the visual context will really help... :D

Anyway, best of luck with the project and the associated tools, this all looks really cool!
