My Frogger Toy Trials - unused Japanese script
« on: February 21, 2019, 05:12:51 am »
I was on a Frogger kick, and stumbled on something more pleasant than a crocodile spawning to ruin that last hop to safety. My Frogger Toy Trials has text that appears to be from a never released Japanese version! Any insight on this, and if it's complete enough to try to enable?

Look for .jp.sdf files in the data/strings folder.

For those who had to Google it, myself included:
"My Frogger Toy Trials is an action video game developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Hawaii and published by Konami for the Nintendo DS handheld video game console. It was first released in North America on November 13, 2006, in Europe on February 23, 2007, and in Australia on February 2007."

So it never got a Japan release, but this find of yours suggests they were planning for it. Is there any more text or is that the lot? It's not a lot.

Is Toby Inc a reference to a toy company or something? :D

Too much text to post here. Each file in the strings folder is named like this.
Elsewhere there's viewable Japanese letters, in some of the game's NFTR fonts.

Toby Inc? I missed that when poking around the game. Google brings up obscure random companies...

Replace the English files with those then to see how it is like in-game.

Before you go too much further you might try the cheat that worked for various other DS games over the years (the second DS Advance Wars and Go! Go! Cosmo Cops! being the most notable). General idea for those was the game dumped the firmware settings (which include language) later in the memory (usually just before the memory given over to overlays for that game). For those games mentioned before the game would ignore it normally but if forced with a cheat then it worked.
I also made a variation on the theme for some people that were language locked because they were using phone based emulators or something. It was the same code there so you might try.

Not my thread but covers what goes

Quote
Simply use the following AR code with any game you want.

227FFCE4 000000XX

OR

22FFFCE4 000000XX

(both codes work, it appears they can be accessed in to memory points)

Just replace XX by your language code, and it should work.
Here are the language codes you can use:
00 = Japanese
01 = English
02 = French
03 = German
04 = Italian
05 = Spanish

It is a bit crude for what is ultimately a simple mod but you can hardcode DS cheats in with DSATM ( https://gbatemp.net/download/dsatm.31528/ ). If you fancy a bit less crude I once made the Advance Wars Days of Ruin/Dark Conflict language cheat into an assembly hack*. Slightly worked up version in my GBA/DS docs http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=14708 . In general words I just found the instruction referencing the firmware settings and forced the return to be the value for Japanese.

*if some random forum search has led future people here then don't use my version from the above or something like https://gbatemp.net/threads/advance-wars-days-of-ruin-dark-conflict-language-mod.254868/ . There is a better choice you can use http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/1003/

If not then yeah you get to make the script work however you will. Redirection of files or overwriting of others, and correcting any font/decoding woes, being the big two approaches).

Actually, I've noticed one thing you CAN do without hacking.
Setting the language to Japanese enables entering your player's name in Japanese when starting a new game.
