Commander Keen translation(s)
« on: October 08, 2018, 02:38:20 pm »
Well, I think you must have been known the 8-year old genius, Commander Keen.
But I don't know if there are audiences for the game here (especially for the translation).

Vote now! You have a week to do that. Decide whether Keen translations are needed or should be submitted here.

Er... into which language? You're asking the question in English, but you specialise in Hungarian translations... I don't really understand the question.

I meant any translations and I didn't specialise in Hungarian translations at all.

You have submitted 36 translations to the site and 34 are in Hungarian.

Anyway, I'm sure any translation is welcome here, but given Commander Keen is in English, we'd have to hear from someone who doesn't understand English.

Just to let you know, somebody tries to translate it to Japanese (?).

Isn't Commander Keen one of those games with sources? Might as well start from that.

Keen Dreams source code exits only officially. For the other episodes there's no source code.

The source code for Keen 4-6 was unearthed a number of years ago, but it seems they were not allowed to release it publicly.

Anyway, the games have already been thoroughly dissected and re-implemented at this point, so I'm rather surprised there aren't already a bunch of translations for them floating around out there.  It's not like they're very text-heavy.
This depresses me. I feel like a goldfish right now...

Wait a minute, we have Commander Genius now.  This would be a considered a PC/mobile mod in that case (outside of the GBC game anyway), which IIRC is still considered a big no in the database.  Or at least, outside of Puyo Puyo Sun and Ys Complete.  It'd be up to the staff to make an exception here.

Translations may be already done over in the site's forums, wouldn't hurt to check first.

I'm afraid no translation(s) for CloneKeenPlus. Besides, you can also move texts in Keen as well, so you can have longer texts to let you know.

Eh?  There are 118 PC translations in the database.

Oh, I'm wrong here after all.  Sorry!

I remember something about PC mods that was important enough to stick on the Patreon.

PC mods are actually out of scope here.

According to the site, in PC translation case exceptions can be taken (for example Commander Keen here).
And there are a lots of other website that is for PC game mods.

Isn't the general intention not to come into the crosshairs of companies that are still exploiting commercially the games as premium releases? Hence the no current gen rule, avoiding modern PC games but allowing older ones, removing anything that might offend even "official" releases by repro makers?

If the Commander Keen developers are community friendly enough to have released full source codes for earlier games and attempted to do so for later ones, then romhacking.net should be in the clear for this one.

Well, as far as I correctly remember, the creator of Commander Keen, Tom Hall left Id Software and thus, the rights of Keen ceased, that's why the source code couldn't be released apparently.
That's why Keen 7-9 (The Universe is Toast trilogy) was never released either as Tom must get the rights back to make other Keen games again.
