Hey 8.Bit.Fan

First off: great hack; extremely enjoyable!

I ran into a potential snag in v8.52 (Normal) during the Crystelle fight. A couple of times when I was getting near the end and reflecting their meganuke attack I had the game softlock on me. I rewound it both times to see where it happened and it seems to be associated with only one of them dying. I have now beaten the fight having wiped out several of them at once, but it was a strange hiccup.

I've previously played versions 1.0c, 2.10, 4.31f, 6.0b, 7.0b, 7.0d, and 8.30 and I didn't run into anything like this in any of the fights, but I did also install the FFIV TLS Equipment Screen Mod. I don't think that's the cause because I've used it before but I wanted to put that out there. https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4378/

Also I have a few questions if you don't mind. The first is about the Time-Egg. I feel like I read at one point that it should work on everything, including bosses, but that doesn't seem universal; what are the limitations? The second question is what do I do with the HeroMedal and the Dark Matter? Finally what's the story with the new guarded room in Upper Babel? I've been there a few times and the only thing I can think of is that it's a grind spot.

If any or all of those are setups for later releases then I'll look forward to those versions. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I have tried it and cannot seem to replicate the issue. But I will keep and eye out for it!  :thumbsup:

The Time-Egg is just a much more powerful version of StopSand or the spell Stop. It does not work on bosses unfortunately, otherwise it would make boss fights very easy and broken! :)

The HeroMedal will be useful once you have access to the

Final Shop that opens up after you defeat the Black Dragon. :)
Dark Matter is just an easter egg and homage to the original versions and does nothing ... you can sell it for a good sum of money however! ;)

A new version should be out by the end of this month and will include a bunch of new spells, etc. Hope you'll get to enjoy that one as well! :)

Unfortunately, because of the amount of work necessary for the changes in v9, my team and I ran out of time for the Novice Version for v9. However, we haven't stopped working on this since v9's launch so stay tuned for the next update as it shall include both the Novice and Expert Versions.

Hey!  So I tried FFIV Ultima, and I have some good things and some criticism.

Good things:  I had fun throughout a the first 95% of the game.  The changes to a lot of characters were welcome.  Cecil being able to dual wield, Rydia being able to use harps, and Edge significantly buffed.  Great changes. 

The new bosses, starting at Mist Rage, were a welcome surprise and a lot of fun to fight.

Criticism:  Starting at the end game, things started to go downhill pretty quickly.

I feel the optional bosses are a master class of what NOT to do to make post game bosses fun and challenging.

1.  Many of them require grinding to be able to beat.  That includes items and xp.

2.  Many of them use random attacks, so bad RNG can wipe you, and that bad RNG is actually pretty common.  So you need to get lucky to win.

3.  Many require abuse of hidden in-game mechanics, such as lowering Cecil's agility, making him an 'agility anchor' as enemy agility is based on Cecil's agility.

4.  There is a preferred order of super bosses, but no in-game hints on what to do.

5.  I'm not a personal fan of what I call, 'map puzzles', where you have to figure out what combination of vehicles to use to get to a certain place, or if there is a secret path somewhere with no visual hints or NPC hints.  For example, the hidden path to Goddess is fine because a crystal gives you a hint in the Core.

So really, in order to beat the endgame, you have to either figure out everything yourself through a lot of frustrating trial-and-error, or you have to ask on the Discord.  Neither of which is especially fun.

Here's what I would do to fix things:

1.  Exponentially increase the amount of experience given for fighting stuff in the Lunar Core.  The goal is that by just fighting things as they come, you should hit level 99 by the time you reach Zeromus.  This takes out the grinding requirement.  Maybe increase the pink tail drop rate by a lot... like a 25% drop rate.  Or better yet, make the bosses in the core drop pink tails 100% of the time.... so you don't have to grind at all.

2.  All of the post game bosses need to be majorly revamped so that they present reasonable challenges, not insane 'need to exploit the game and hope for good RNG' challenges.  The latter isn't a challenge, it's an exercise in frustration.  It's fine to have 'puzzle fights' like Raiden, where the fight is easy once you figure out what to do... if there are hints in the game.  But even that needs a bit of a tweak:  Raise the amount of time between when he raises his sword, and does his Atom Edge.  Make it so the Lunar Core revives his defender less often.  That sort of thing.  Other examples (this isn't exhaustive):

*  Get rid of the RNG digest for the crystals.  That just plain isn't fun.

*  The enemies that have a 1HKO attack?  Slow them down so people have time to actually use decoys to counter that.  (or better yet, give Cecil a late game item that makes him auto-cover everyone, even if they aren't weak, and drastically increase his defense so he can survive multiple of those attacks; so his role of tank is actually a thing)

*  Goddess is designed so that it's a cakewalk with charm protection, or impossible without.  A better idea might be to give her an unblockable charm, that she uses far less often.

3.  Provide much more in-game information on the post game via NPCs.  This includes where to find the post game bosses, the order to fight them, and a good tactic to beat them.  More examples peppered throughout the game to give you advice would be great. For example, an NPC in Baron or Fabul that says "Hey, headbands prevent charm, you might want to stock up on those!"  Would be grand.  The goal should be for an average person to find everything and beat your mod without any help from Discord.

All in all, I think your mod has potential and is nearly there, it just needs tweaks and such.  Thank you, and good luck!

It's been a while since I've updated this post with new information as we've migrated over to the discord channel. But v10 is a big update and I would like to highlight some of the additions to the hack here!

List of version 10 changes:
  • Party Swapping is now available at endgame with up to 6 different characters!! You can now even Solo Cecil for endgame!! HUGE thanks to chillyfeez for making this possible!
  • 4 New Weapons! 6 New Spells! 2 New Bosses including one at endgame that had a randomly generated AI!! Again, HUGE thanks to chillyfeez for the ASM work on this!
  • Magically Imbued Weapons are now introduced in the game! Specific weapons will randomly cast a spell upon striking an enemy! Thanks again to chillyfeez for coding this to happen!
  • New commands and upgradable commands!
  • Damage Limit has been raised to 14999!!
  • New easter eggs added such as connecting the Upper and Lower half of Tower of Babil via a Teleporter!
  • New Blue Magic for Fusoya!
  • General balance to characters, weapons and gears, spells, etc.
  • General polish of maps, gameplay and dialog.

Version 11 has just been released and this is looking to be VERY close to the actual product that we had envisioned from the start. We've tirelessly been working on this for the past 2 months and I hope you'll all like all the extra stuff we've added to this update! Here's the list of the biggest additions to v11:

LOVED the 2nd boss fight after the cave of mist!
So far I'm digging the extra abilities the characters have.
My one critique so far is that the script could use a bit of grammar clean up here and there.

Have you designed the bonus bosses with the Demifiend bonus boss from Digital Devil Saga in mind?
If so, you need to adjust the options of the bosses.

It isn't a very pleasant experience to be literally crushed with a Dungeon Master's "Rock falls, everyone dies" attack after defeating 3 of 4 crystals.

The Demifiend on the other hand crushes parties at the start, when they are armed with complete immunities everywhere and can only be defeated, if you allow some weak points.

In any case, I am going to cheat at this boss, because I do not wish to spend another hour on it.

While they are available to challenge relatively early on, the Crystals are intended to be one of the hardest individual battles in the game.

That being said, no fight in the game is impossible (ok, there is one fight we actually did design to be impossible without gg codes, but even that has been won legitimately by one player). Most come down to:
Party setup
Equipment
Strategy

The endgame content is intended to mesh with the expansion of endgame equipment and party swapping. You may need to seriously shake things up from one superboss to the next.

As far as strategy goes, I'd suggest stopping by the FF4U discord. It's an active community, and there are a lot of passionate players willing to offer advice.

Ultima is great fun!

One thing I noticed though, the two patches are different sizes.  Is there more going on than just the header, or is the no-header made using a headered ROM meaning most of the original ROM data exists in the patch?
