So, is this in any way related to the fan translation? Or is this a completely separate thing? We were mere months away from finally being able to play the game in English.

I'm not a member of the discord so I really have no idea what goes on behind the scenes, but it would be awesome if there was some sort of contract established to use the fan translation.

I couldn't tell. I didn't even know there was a fantranslation attempt until yesterday, when I found a thread in this site with its last reply written in 2013. I don't know whether this upcoming localization is in any way related to that translation project or not.

Edit: I've searched again and I found this neogaf thread with much more up-to-date info about the fantranslation. https://www.neogaf.com/threads/moon-remix-rpg-adventure-fan-translation-project-almost-done-testing-phase.871910/page-3

The official release has nothing to do with the fan translation. The project's translator, Miles DeVinny, has a thread on Twitter talking about the Switch announcement: https://twitter.com/lumslack/status/1169401639809085440

Sounds like they were currently debugging and polishing their translation but still didn't really have an idea of when they would release their patch. It is sad that their work will not end up being released since they spent so many years working on it but it is really amazing that the game is getting an official English release. And based on Onion Game's tweet about the news, it seems that the English version will come out a short while after Moon's Japanese release in October.

So the fan translation really is being canceled, I'm kinda disappointed, but I hope the official version turns out well.

I'm kinda suspicious about how fast they intend to push out an english translation though, hopefully they don't sweatshop it.

It hasn't been confirmed yet but it seems that Tim Rogers is working on Moon's localization, who has been teasing for a while that he is translating a "classic JRPG". It would makes sense since he previously worked on the English translation of Dandy Dungeon with Onion Games, which I heard had a good localization. So it seems like it might be in good hands.

I was totally shocked to hear this news; its a bigger surprise than Simon Belmont in Smash Bros imo. I had no intentions of buying a Switch but now I might?

I don't like to overhype things and I'm sorry if I seem to be. I'm not sure how audiences would feel about it graphically and in a post-Undertale world considering, if I had to make a comparison, it felt like the UT of its time, subverting staples of the time to tell its story.
