It just so happens that I'm playing the Final Fantasy II NES English prototype these days, and yeah I've run into the same issue.
But I also played Dawn of Souls on GBA, so I just compare the two.
In the example above, the way the NES MingWu and GBA Minwu have their spells listed is exactly the same.
NES Shld = GBA Barrier = Will only protect against randomly chosen specific status ailments and elements.
NES Fog = GBA Protect = Increase "ABSORB" which is physical defense.
NES Lose = GBA Fog = I guess a mix-up on the developer's end, what is this I don't even....
