Castlevania: Umbral Genesis (CV1)
« on: April 10, 2018, 10:03:47 pm »

Figured I'd post up a new project aside from the others (still cursing reVamp for that fiasco.)

I know.  Another Castlevania 1 hack among the vast list on here.  Least this one isn't going to be a simplified character hack ;)

Redid my Hanz sprite to closely resemble his appearance shown in screenshots and sprite sheets that people made of him.  Figured I would use my 8 bit version of him for something :)

One music track for it.  Sought permission from Dr Jacquio to use this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FI7h2vN3WU&t=17s

The rest will be custom made by me and a friend of mine, Sxion, as he will make the reference music.

Stage 1: Ruined Mansion Corridor Entryway
Stage 2: Bodley Mansion Outer Hallway
Stage 3:
Stage 4:
Stage 5:

(Whistles) This looks very promising and Im surprised this romhack will be starring Hanz rather than a Belmont which I think is a nice change of pace :) I can't wait to play this one next year,I'll be looking forward to it! :D

If you are talking about the base game, Castlevania, then its agreeable though I would like to have improvements done to it.

Editing this as there was a change in plans.  I'll update when I get more information.  My apologies for changing this and hope this won't be a current theme for this thread as I am not fond of doing these sort of things.

Before I post up in the help wanted section I'm going to do it here first and see what happens in the  next few weeks on responses towards this.

Due to my life being extremely busy lately and my studies for programming are little to none these days I am seeking someone that can offer assistance with this project.  Need a volunteer that can fiddle around with the MMC5 patch for Castlevania http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2360/ by RetroRain and see what instruments can be added and/or modified along with what improvements can be done to the game itself.  Right now I have time to do the spriting and level layout however since I'm not this advanced in programming to figure nor understand this stuff I'll need an extra hand with them testing this on another ROM.  Optomon is busy with his own stuff so I'm in need of someone to do this for me and find out what can be done for the music and game play for MMC5.

In relation to the MMC5 music, I'm also needing to find someone to do FamiTracker for me on this.  I tried it, know it a little but lost all interest as its not my cup of tea due to high amounts of frustrations it causes on my end.  Sxion, the friend that's composing the music in FL Studio, has quite a few made however have no one available that can do these tracks for me in FamiTracker.  I'm also hoping you will be trustworthy in not sharing the music by him as they are copyrighted by his name so please keep that in mind (I have full permission to use these since he is creating them towards this project.)  I'd like to have these done in MMC5 as that is the direction I'm moving Umbral Genesis towards so need Howling Hybrid redone for MMC5.  Nesfan is busy with stuff on Cadence of Agony so I don't want to rip him away from that as a lot of progress is being made on that project thanks to him.

You can inquire on  here via this thread, PM me, email or via discord.  I don't care which you choose just as long as you can share the stuff with me along on your findings and supplying the stuff to you for making things out in FamiTracker.  I have stopped using dropbox so sharing will be either by email or discord for direct files.

Yeah, it is :)

On a side note, going to  utilize the graphics from both Legends NES and VoH 2 due to recent problems that rose up to their cancellation.  I'm not going to let those sprites go to waste.  No drama just something that didn't work out for me in the end.  Of how I see it didn't work out from the start either so cutting my losses to move onward  :P

Also don't give up on finding a programmer for the game too.

Wait what, you canceled two of those games?

Yep, I did.

Posted up a wanted thread about reworking reVamp by someone.  I felt it was in the parameters of the rules since I did have the source code for it however guess it wasn't good enough so it was taken down and moved by a moderator.  So to spare me the headache I tossed both projects with revamp's source code and am now cannibalizing those sprites of both Legends NES and VoH 2 into Umbral Genesis.  I'll get flak for this decision but I don't care.

You and many other people.

A future project will have Sonia in it.  Least that one I have tons of resources for and can rely on its actual program to get the job done instead of the train wreck that was turning out to be Legends NES :P

It will be a bit, sometime later next year until this is released though depending on what goes on.  Been trying to study programming and holy cow is it making my eyes go cross eyed.  Its very intimidating.  Going to at least try to learn it a bit more before tossing in the towel.  Gonna try to learn it at least  :P

Rework on Stage 1 using Legends NES sprites.  I'll redo the intro stage sometime as I will give that more detail.  Guess I'll call this stage Ruined Castle Entryway.

Even though I cancelled both Legends NES and VoH 2 I am going to move them to the NES Maker so I can have my own freedom instead of relying on stuff so they will no longer be ROM hacks but Homebrews.  They will be freeware in the end so no worries there.  I will pick them back up in a few years as I still have a bitter taste in my mouth about the reVamp issue.  VoH 3 will be back on the board for CotM hack, just hoping someone will make an editor for that.  Ugh, all this stuff and I'm hoping/wishing for a miracle on certain things but such is life  :)

Awesome,it's looking great so far,but since this mod will use the Castlevania Nes game,it'll be short but I don't care since it'll have something new like one of the original music etc,I'll be looking forward to play it in 2019.

I'll make up for it game play, least I owe that much to the community.

For MMC5, I might have someone that could help me on the patch for Castlevania however its still uncertain as they will get back with me.  Still need a spare hand in making the MMC5 reference track stuff in FamiTracker by someone that is trustworthy as I have a few songs that need to be done for FamiTracker by Sxion.  I'll probably have two more by the end of next week depending on his schedule.  Nesfan is still busy with CoA so I really do need that helping hand for making MMC5 reference tracks if I want to release this in the 2019 time frame  :P

Stage 1 is done after so many other things going on with this crazy weather.

The rope is cosmetic, an ode to Legends NES that I left it in there.

Someone suggested that I look at Snake's Revenge and have someone put that sound engine in.  Konami into Konami.  Its very tempting yet I still have to find someone to do that though its not high on the to-do list right now.  I'm well aware of its soundtrack and I might go with it :)

Story wise, I'll reveal this later as I'm reworking things along with doing sprites for the lesser enemies on Stage 1 :)

Yes it is.  I recreated it after eyeing stuff on YouTube as I didn't feel like digging out my PSX to look at the sprite.  I'm hoping to have it function differently than the Holy Water to that or similar to the ashes.  Wishful thinking but its a plan :)

I'm hoping to have all bosses customized so they will act differently along with quite a few of the enemies.  Really want Frankenstein's Monster redone so it doesn't rely on another leg animation when walking as that really threw me off when customizing a boss sprite for MetroidVania so kinda hoping to curve around that on this project.

Stage 2 is done though ironing stuff out along with proper enemy placement.  For some reason things glitched out so I cannot place enemies around which has hindered some stuff however it hasn't broken the game.

I have some other stuff glitching out on me for some reason which is hindering me on placing certain stuff within the rooms so I'll need to document those areas and have Sephirous look at those once I'm done with all of the levels.  There's also a glitched door that forms, not sure why.  I'll have him look at that as well.  The glitches don't seem to hinder the game play though they are there and exist.  Was going to customize the doors but until this flew up I'll leave them be until the issue can be identified.
