Trade & Battle: Card Hero - GBC
« on: March 17, 2018, 05:44:46 pm »
Hi everyone, I've started a new project which seems to be going fairly smoothly at the moment so stay tuned.

I'm currently stuck on choosing the right font for the game so if you can help me choose from the 4 I've put in below, that'd be a great help.

Font 1

Font 2

Font 3

Font 4

First one's cleanest.

(Also, just call it a cartoon or an anime. No one calls them "animations" casually. Also, both words are shorter.)

The first one is the cleanest, but personally I find the second one easier to read. I'm not specially fond of any of the 3 options, personally.
In a sky full of people, only some want to fly.
Isn't that crazy?

Haha yeah I'm very aware. I've used animation essentially to fill up that first line, then Anime from there on in. I may look to change it to say "anime called Card Hero"

I'm pro Font 2. I think it's pleasant to look at.

I say stick with font 2 as 1 is clean but the lack of bold could be eye-straining to read. Also, is this gonna be a full translation of the game? I tried playing this but the Japanese stonewalled me.

Font 2 but without the shadow. And if you will going to use the other fonts, use normal "quotation marks".

Font 1 is the same as the 8-bit Games of the first two generations of Pokemon and we are familiar with that, but it can be eyestraining as Ziko said. The second font is the same as the three Final Fantasy Legend games on Game Boy and that could be a next to perfect alternative font which I am sure many of you will agree with. Font 3 and 4 are not our cup of tea especially the last font which comes from a poorly translated English patch from back in the day. Font 3 is from a THQ game or other 8-bit games from American publishers on Game Boy Color games I am not familiar with. If you guys don't like font 1, font 2 it is. Many of you will hate font 4 due to it coming from a poorly translated English patch from who knows were it came from. People will have mixed reactions for font 3. People may like font 1 since it comes from the first two generations of Pokemon adventure games we know and remember. Font 2 is from the second best game series out of the four fonts we are all familiar with and I am sure many people will vote for that since that font is less eyestraining out of the four fonts shown here.

Appreciate all the feedback and the deep analysis of the fonts.

Font 1 is a very similar but not the same font as Pokemon early generation. You'll see some capitilisations are different as well as the lower case 'g', 'r', upper case 'Y' etc. Pokemon had a much cleaner font, as it's so widely used I tried to stay away from it.

Font 4 is a basic bold serif font - if it was used in a poor translation - that's unlucky to whoever remembers that and associates them together. I think it's a nice font subjectively but it may be a bit think for 3-4 line paragraph text boxes, as is font 3.

Font 2 seems the most popular which I may choose now that everyone seems to agree it works best. Without the drop shadow it looks too narrow and forces the thought of having to make a VWF which I wont be doing.

4 looks like the DOS font.
It looks like the font that was used in a bad translation of Pokemon Green (I've seen a youtube video and clearly somebody has Twitch Plays Pokemon has gotten it, but I don't know of anybody releasing a patch to play it).
It's hard to find even a couple of that since even ebay is filled with what I assume is a hack of the official Blue translation.

KM, you've always been spot on with fonts.

Edit - Just update the game with font 2, replaced the drop shadow with hard lines so it doesn't look to narrow with fixed width.

Final font

...What did I do? Whatever I did, it wasn't intentional. Basically I just took the first font (the Pokemon one) and made it thicker/more readable.

The Japanese 「quotes」 should be replaced with "quotes" though.
