NES Metal Slader Glory translation attempt
« on: February 04, 2018, 03:52:35 pm »

Yeah, cute...

So far, after a long training-pause to face this monster this is what the project has got (for now):

The table has been completed after several checks and the script properly dumped. Story is about 500 KB.
The script is both in English and Spanish (both at halfway, based on debug mode information).
I have made a program to update the pointers once the script got inserted.
I have made another program to insert the new MTE and "register" it automatically. (This game is heavily organized across inner tables that need to be updated.)

Most of graphics are in English so there's no need to touch them (arranging them is as hellish as trying to identify the
draws as first sight).
It would be nice to set proportional font in this game but I have no idea where to study that technique or even if it's possible to do, or even if it's overly ambitious.

TL;DR: this is not the beginning of this attempt but the final of the beginning. I wonder if it'll see light someday.

Isn't Pennywise working on this? Is this the same project? https://youtu.be/SPC6AdLjCaI

I didn't know pennywise was on this game although he once advised me saying that this game doesn't require any particularly special code which was my idea at the beginning for getting more space. Now it makes sense why he said "this" game. Hum, now that I see this video seems to be pretty much up-to-date. Very good for them.

Great minds think alike. :) I was interested in translating this game last year, but after contacting Pennywise, I was told the game was close to ready for testing.

If you're in the market for an interesting looking adventure game there's always TM Network. It's of course a tie in with a Japanese rock band, but it's also a time-travel adventure where you have to prevent a nuclear war? Seems like you do it Bill and Ted's style, by getting them to their concert. :P I don't think it's particularly well reviewed, but the music is pretty good, and it might be fun to translate. Why not reuse your work for the enhanced Super Famicom port?
It's almost like a direct port, but with additional content and far more free space.
Font is at 0x27D862.
It's not like anyone is interested in that version, even though it's clearly the superior one (NES one is a technical achievement though), and you probably could implement a real VWF there :) Would be a shame to see your work so far go to waste otherwise.

I do believe that someone was working on the SFC port as well though, Pennywise might know if that is the case. MSG is a massive project still, and largely completed at that, so your time may be better spent working on some other adventure game, like filler suggested. There are a few FC adventure games that aren't in the murder mystery genre I believe. ;)

Nah, no one's working on the SFC version, but the plan is to start on the SFC version once the NES version is released. No point in announcing/talking about it when the details still need to figured out.

Btw, my translation is complete, finished, but not released yet.

Does that mean the translation still needs to go through testing or is it even further along than that?

Pretty excited just to see a new Metal Slader Glory thread start up. Been following Pennywise's translation since the Help Wanted ad was posted and was stumbling my way through the Japanese version of Metal Slader long before that. Can't wait to someday play the game in English.

Yes, it went through extensive rounds of testing by myself, the testers and the translator.

This is amazing news! I can't wait for it's release. I've been wanting to play this game for years.
