PS3 Controller on Win 10 PC
« on: January 13, 2018, 08:42:28 pm »
I just got a new laptop, first computer I've owned with Windows 10.
Previous machines I've had, I didn't really care about, so downloading a bunch of crap until I found what works wasn't really an issue, but I'd like to keep this one as clean as possible for as long as possible, so I'm turning to the community I trust the most with this info.
What would be the best driver to get to run my (sixaxis) PS3 controller on my new computer?
Bluetooth connection would be ideal, but I'd be OK with plugging it in if that's what I'd have to do.
Thanks!

Can't say I have any expiration with these as I don't use that controller, but I've seen a few things mentioned here and there, like on the PCSX2 forums, so take this with a grain of salt and wait for others to chime in.

Anyway a quick look on this wiki: http://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Controllers#PlayStation_DualShock

Suggests ScpToolkit, which looks open source which is good, not sure how active it is, but worth considering. https://forums.pcsx2.net/Thread-ScpToolkit-XInput-Wrapper-aka-ScpServer-Reloaded

Another I've heard about is DS44Windows, http://ds4windows.com/ which also has a PCSX2 forum post, https://forums.pcsx2.net/Thread-DS4Windows-J2K and also on GitHub https://github.com/Ryochan7/DS4Windows

EDIT: After looking closer, it looks like http://ds4windows.com/ is old, and https://github.com/Ryochan7/DS4Windows is an updated/continuation of it.

Anyway wait for others to chime in on this, I don't know jack.

I use SCP Toolkit, works pretty fine most of the time, can't recall any problems except for having to toggle it back on when I reboot the computer, pretty sure it also supports bluetooth but I've never had a sensor to test it out with so I can't say for sure how that works.

Anything is good compared to the trashfire that was MotionInJoy though, that program was a fucking mess.

The sole advantage to MotionInJoy is that (provided you speak the right incantations and wait for the right phase of the moon) you can use it to pair a DS3 with a PSP.  To my knowledge, nothing else has duplicated this functionality outside of a standard PS3.  I would love to hear otherwise.  (I'm worried about pairing my DS3 with one of my Bluetooth receivers now as I can't be sure I'll be able to pair it with my PSP again later without serious agony.)

Stick with SCP otherwise.  No problems there.

(DS4Windows doesn't support the DS3, does it?)

I'll also recommend ScpToolkit. I've been running it for a couple of years to drive two DS3s via a single Targus Bluetooth adapter and it's been great. It emulates XInput so it presents the controllers as XBox ones (So you get zero config usage for most PC games).

The only issue I had is that XInput rumble doesn't work with older DInput rumble games. I found a wrapper that fixes this, though, called "Force Feedback Driver for XInput" by someone named Masahiko Morii that works great.

cool, thanks, guys.
I think I actually had scp on an old machine and just forgot what it was called.

Anybody have any thoughts on why I can't get SCP to work?
I downloaded the toolkit, Plugged my DS3 in, allowed Windows to install its default drivers, ran the driver installer, selected my DS3. The installer said it was all done. It gave me a notification saying "restart needed," so I rebooted. But the PC still doesn't recognize controller input. When I go to my Game Controller settings in windows and configure the settings of the DS3, there is no response when I press buttons. And yes, I did try pressing the PS button.

Did you install the XBox 360 controller driver when you ran the driver installer?  You will need that if you've never used an Xbox 360 controller on your computer at all.

It doesn't let me check that box at all. I'm thinking Xbox drivers are native on Win10, because I can't seem to find Xbox 360 controller drivers for Win10 anywhere...

Oh, yes, that's quite possible.

In my "Devices and Printers" panel, for some reason I have an entry for both "PLAYSTATION(R) 3 Controller" and "Xbox 360 Controller for Windows".  Right-clicking either one of them and selecting "Game controller settings" brings up a dialog with an entry for "Controller (XBOX 360 For Windows)".  Does that resemble what you are seeing at all?

I should add that if you are using the stable release from January 2016, apparently the beta is significantly different.  Alternatively, if you're using the beta, maybe the stable release would be better?  Just make sure you follow the instructions about wiping the old install if you switch from one to the other.
