DKC2 Idea: Donkey Kong change character sprites
« on: November 22, 2017, 07:43:13 pm »
My idea is to recreate a hack idea of Donkey Kong Country 2 where Donkey Kong is playable. The project was first announced back in 2014, but it has been silent since 2016. So I want to make the hack. I have the SDK2 editor for DKC2, but what do I need to do in order to have Donkey Kong be playable?

Thanks in advance.

A lot of work.
Assuming that the DKC2 engine doesn't contain leftovers for DK (I have no idea how similar they are), then you'd have to recreate it.
Do you know ASM? Because you'll probably need it.

Porting over the sprites only is one thing. Assuming it isn't compressed, it's just a matter of finding and working with the right palette, then a copy and paste job.

Porting over the actual character, including game play mechanics and controls, is something much more complex and on a higher level.

Thanks for the answers. What's "ASM"?

Assembly language programming. The language of the CPU.
If you don't know (and I would guess that by that comment), you'd probably need to learn that first.

Because, yes, you'd probably need to re-program Donkey Kong's gameplay mechanics into the game. His movements, hit detection, etc. All of it.

It would make way more sense to do that with Donkey Kong country 3 as Kiddy is far more like Donkey, then it would simply be a sprite hack and require no asm. (Plus the story would make more sense)

DKC3: Having Donkey Kong Playable
« Reply #6 on: November 25, 2017, 02:03:44 pm »
Thanks for the advice. I happen to find out that hacking DKC3 would be easy since Donkey Kong and Kiddy Kong have similar moves. I have SDK3 Editor, but how do I edit Kiddy's sprites (replacing them with Donkey's sprites), to make DK playable?

As for changing the tiles, I recommend Tile Molester (although it is tricky to use for a beginner).

Donkey Kong Country 3: Donkey Kong Playable

I recently thought about having Kiddy's sprites replaced by Donkey Kong's, and I'm planning to include Rambi since Ellie wasn't much of a great animal buddy in the 3rd game. I have the SDK3 Editor, but can you recommend any stuff that can help me change Kiddy's sprites into Donkey's? I tried using yy-chr, with this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xva9TEEgsok, but it didn't work with these sprites. https://phyreburnz.deviantart.com/art/Donkey-Kong-custom-sprites-685333565 (Credit goes to Phyreburnz for the custom sprites) All I get from searching up is just orange and red squares. I require assistance. Thanks to anyone who can help me with this.

I thought somebody else was already looking into this.
At least there should be another thread on it.

Indeed, that was the other thread started by Mr. TheBest.

Much of what was said about DKC2 is the same for DKC3.  Were you expecting things to be different for some reason?

Yes, the above post from December 20 started as a separate thread.
