Super Mario Bros. 3: The Rainbow Realms
« on: October 26, 2017, 01:48:19 am »
Hey all, have been making decent progress with my SMB3 hack, so I thought I'd share!

The basic premise is a colourful collection of levels designed in a similar style to that of the original game, with each world having it's own unique colour palette. My primary focus is on creative and fun level design with a difficulty curve mirroring that of the original game (something that is often lacking in SMB3 hacks). Right now there is no intention to do custom graphics, but that may happen in the future. The first four six seven worlds are completely done, with work currently being done on worlds 5, 6, 7 8.

UPDATED 16/01/18:

PREVIEW VIDEO of World's 1-4
PREVIEW VIDEO of World's 5-7

WORLD 1 - The Hillside (100% complete) - Blue skies and rolling green hills make up the majority of levels in our quaint opening world.

WORLD 2 - Strawberry Plains (100% complete) - Delicious strawberry pink themed levels. No, don't lick the pipes!

WORLD 3 - Mystery Caves (100% complete) - Hidden treasures galore in these underground caves with a tricky overworld pipe maze to boot.

WORLD 4 - Koopa Beach (100% complete) - Cute seaside levels patrolled by friendly koopas (and a bunch of nipper plants now that I think about it)

WORLD 5 - Sunset Ridge (100% complete) - Dusk themed levels in the clouds and the sky.

WORLD 6 - Marshmallow Valley (100% complete) - Pastel flavoured valley with increasing difficulty.

WORLD 7 - Arctic Isles (100% complete) - A mix of tricky underground and icy levels as Mario traverses the Arctic.

WORLD 8 - ??? (50% complete)

Sounds tricky, but I still have a couple more airship levels to complete, so I'm intrigued...

Haha, well that's the plan. I've had to re-edit a couple levels after accidentally making them harder than I intended, but that's what testers are for!

Can I do it? I know how to when I did it on smb3 disassembly.

Haha, well maybe let me finish everything else first before I consider experimenting!

I was going to watch the video but I had to stop. From what I've seen, I already fully trust your judgement and I don't want to spoil it for me. I didn't see anything that felt wrong or that needed to change, on the contrary, I absolutely loved it. Please go on, this is amazing! Laid back, simple super mario bros 3 fun.

Looks promising. The colors were always boring I thought in the original NES version. I liked the remastered SMB3 in All-Stars. This definitely looks promising, along with the many other SMB3 hacks out there.

Hey hey, had a productive few weeks and managed to knock out worlds 5 and 6, with progress currently being made on the last two worlds. Here are some screenshots of some new levels:

WORLD 5 - Sunset Ridge (100% complete) - Dusk themed levels in the clouds and the sky.

WORLD 6 - Marshmallow Valley (100% complete) - Cute pastel coloured world, as level length and difficulty begins to increase.

~~

That's all for now! Going to be a busy holiday season for me, so probably won't see much progress until the new year. Ciao!

I really like the original music, so you probably won't hear anything new, although working out how to change which world map plays what music is on the list of tricky-things-to-do-that-I-haven't-figured-out-yet.

This is one fun hack I would be finished.

Please, add separate sprites for Luigi.

I wish you Happy Holidays.

Oh my god these are so CUTE!!!! I'm definitely following this. I've actually been jonsing for an old school platformer, and I love supporting rom hacks but all too often they ratchet up the difficulty to absurd levels. This looks really promising. :D
