What's it called when more than one letter is in a tile?
« on: November 01, 2016, 06:01:45 pm »
Sorry for the dumb question, but I'm writing something about ROM hacking, and I was wondering if there's a widely used term for when you put more than one letter in an 8-by-8 tile (like two lowercase Ls) to save window space. If there's a term for it, I haven't heard it yet. Thanks to anyone who can give me answer!

Is that what they refer to as "squishy" tiles?

I've always called them "smoosh" tiles. A Google search suggests you've got the right term, though.

Depending upon the approach it can be many things.

If you are looking for tools and guides to handle it then dual tile encoding and multi tile encoding (DTE and MTE if you want initialisms) cover things here. Depending upon your reading then a strict one might not encompass it but it plays out the same in the table creation (A3=ll being a line in the table looks and behaves pretty similar to A3=charactername and any limited programs will both probably fail), text extraction, in the insertion program and quite possibly in the game's code as well. About the only thing DTE and MTE will cover that you might find of limited use is how to remove padding between letters so your glyphs/characters/runes/whatever don't get split down the middle.

If you do it yourself then I called it pseudo variable width font in my docs and various posts around the place.

For pure obviousness then multicharacter tiles is pretty hard to beat.

I don't know if there is a more popular name in either hacking or other game/font/encoding/character map/codepage/whatever handling circles. I went searching and a long and strange document on unicode popped up, now I am scared. 'cmap' format 13.0–Many-to-one mappings seems like an expanded version of what you are dealing with here (though from the ROM hacker perspective what it describes is closer to dictionary compression) https://developer.apple.com/fonts/TrueType-Reference-Manual/RM06/Chap6cmap.html and while we are having fun http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&id=IWS-Chapter02

I recall "Squishy Tiles" being used to refer to this at least as far back as 1997-98. I think Demi may have coined the term?
