Anyone found any interesting unused areas?
« on: July 20, 2016, 12:48:50 am »
I always wondered if this community found anything that TCRF has yet to post.

On a side-note does anyone have any clue what exactly is the unused area for Dragon Quest III (SNES) was exactly? TCRF suggests it, but they had not really updated it for a long time now.

TCRF is editable by anyone; there is no particular reason why one could not simply saunter in and add something to the relevant discussion page.

If you're looking for something to contribute, the Euro edition of Super Paper Mario apparently makes a change to a spot in Chapter 5-4 where it is otherwise possible to camp and gain unlimited experience.  I keep hoping someone will step in and confirm that.

Well, not technically through hacking games. But I have found a few interesting things when trying to data mine them outside of TCRF (via a tile editor), or when messing around with codes.

For example, Wario Land 4 has an unused animation for when you kill the seagull in the Wario Hop. As far as I know, this was never used in the actual game, since you can't jump high enough to interact with it.

It also has various beta tiles found underneath the ground in levels too. And there's a room past the far right wall in Palm Tree Paradise with a diamond and some enemies in too. Found that one years before TCRF or other sites about 'unused content' were ever established.

I also found a bunch of unused songs in Luigi's Mansion 2, though I was looking to post the soundtrack in high quality rather than actually mod the game. I eventually registered and (with the help of another member there) posted the songs and stuff on the wiki in the right location.
Like Wario?  If so, check out Wario Forums today!

Similarly, want to test a new gaming site?  Check out Gaming Reinvented! Now in beta!

I found alot of unused attacks in castlevania SOTN for enemies that still ain't documented anywhere on the internet. That fire demon has one where it looks like just his head is sticking out of the ground and then he bursts out and all the debri lands by where his head was. The debri was not colored correctly. I don't remember what else I found. I have no way of hacking that code again unless I was supposed to figure out how to use a external cheat program on an emulator. I found the ones I found using gameshark pro.

Found lots of unused areas, but mainly in RPGs. For example, after some RAM manipulation, one can find out the NA version of Rhapsody still has the missing additional content from the JP version. Story text is blank (likely untranslated yet using a font without JP letters) but menus, items, and even some conversations are translated (very roughly).

Not exactly an unused area, just stuff that tcrf has yet to document.

I know Super Pitfall for the NES has unused areas... The author is too busy with hacking the game.
There are unused graphics, items, hud and enemies too. Some unused enemy graphics are exactly the same pixel art as enemies on the pc-88 version. There are probably unused sound fx too, haven't tested that out yet.

Still amazes me people are still finding stuff in older games.

We really ought to have a dedicated thread for this.

Legend of oasis (Story of Thor 2) has unfinished location, which can be accessed only through the debug menu.

We should make it a wiki!

Interesting that people know of tcrf.net … yet never release any information on the unused stuff they found...

Yeah, that site is officially dead in the water unfortunately.

I think he probably means the forums. Those are pretty dead. Despite that the wiki is very active still.

Yeah, the forum is unfortunately less active than it could be. People are still welcome to post their cool findings there though :)

Feel free to start one here then, with something fresh you found for example. It's always fun to read, and participate, in such threads without being too bogged down in wiki drama or other unrelated issues (also, the content wouldn't disappear for not meeting some nebulous standards decided by some random committee). There's quite a bit of modding sites, fantranslator blogs and game enthusiast forums out there who share such passion.

Back on topic, JRPGs always seem to have the most discarded content.
For example, the final boss (first form)' room in Tenchi Suzou/Terranigma extends quite a bit off-screen:

We are? That's news to me...

News to me as well after spending most of a day trying to get SFCD debug codes to work and documenting the results. (Still can't get Turbo Mode to work.) Speaking for myself though I'm slow to update because I tend to bounce around between projects. Editing a wiki isn't something I have a lot of time for.

I'll get the Phantasy Star IV page updated soon~ish though, honest! (I've been telling myself that for the last six months. Maybe now that I've put it in writing I'll actually do it.)
