Progress Report:
Happy 20th Anniversary, Fire Emblem 4!
The open beta has begun. And with everyone's help, we can make sure this release will be the best it can be. :)

Download the patch file from here:

Beta Version 7 - 2016/07/07 11:47 PM

There's also a sister thread on SerenesForest that may contain additional bug reports:

http://serenesforest.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=63676

Changelog:
Beta Version 7:
  • Reverted prior "fix" for Sol as it was causing countless bugs with HP calculation.
  • Arena level-up bug should now really be fixed this time.
  • Intro graphical text has been cleaned up to remove artifacting.
  • Additional script revisions added.
  • Activating Adept with a negative attack speed should no longer freeze the game.
  • Temporarily added a check for Hawke in the epilogue, implementation may change in a future release.

Before You Begin:
  • Check this post to stay up-to-date with the latest beta version.
  • Battery saves / hard saves should always be compatible between patch versions.
  • Quicksaves / Snapshot saves will likely break between versions if made while dialogue is being displayed.
  • Please be sure to test using either the latest version of Snes9X or Bsnes/Higan.
  • Also, be sure to make plenty of saves and be ready with the screenshot button.
  • Cheating seems to affect behavior adversely in the game, so try to avoid it unless absolutely necessary.
  • If you discover any bugs, or have any suggestions to make, please leave a comment in this thread.

Known Issues:
  • The Unit and Item menu still flicker when scrolling quickly through them (sorry, still working on it :( )
  • Total turn count at the end shows a stray apostrophe if less than 100.

Need to Verify:
  • Epilogue text when Verdane has an heir with an unmarried sibling.
  • Various ending combinations
  • Different character deaths / game overs in every chapter (Don't be afraid to lose!)

(Moving all alpha news and progress into this spoiler to save screen space)
Spoiler:
After finishing working on Romancing Saga, I was looking for other projects to work on. I was mostly just offering help to others with their own projects, but in November, I was introduced by a friend that loves Fire Emblem games to Bookofholsety, who's been in charge of Project Naga, a total re-translation of Fire Emblem 4.

Bookofholsety has been working on the script and iterating over it for the last two years, which I thought was a tremendous show of dedication. He has also enlisted the help of his friends on Serenes Forest, who are providing feedback on the script and also in customizing the various graphics in the game (intro, title screen, maps, etc.). My role is to help with the programming aspect of things and get the text into the game.

I've been working the last couple months with Bookofholsety, since the current translation apparently is incomplete and somewhat buggy. I hope to be able to work with him and his friends to make a 100% completely playable and finished experience.

I've modified my text editor from KMT and RS1 to work with FE4's dialogue. The rom has been expanded to 64 Mbits to hold the extra graphics and text, so there shouldn't be any need to compromise on length.

Things that are done:
  • All Graphical Modifications (Intro, Title, Maps, Chapter Names)
  • Combat scenes
  • Map menu selections
  • Unit screen
  • Items screen
  • Status/Data screen
  • Skills screen
  • Options/Config screen
  • Individual Unit Details screen
  • Phase change
  • Shop/Castle screens
  • Load/Save screens
  • Item descriptions
  • Chronology intro
  • Status Effects
  • Inside/Outside Staves
  • Inventory full menu
  • Chapter 4 Sylvia dance glitch fixed
  • Chapter 6 Seliph 2-star Authority bug fixed
  • (Requested) Level up stat increases all remain visible on screen instead of fading out
  • All Prologue dialogue
  • All Chapter 1 dialogue
  • All Chapter 2 dialogue
  • All Chapter 3 dialogue
  • All Chapter 4 dialogue
  • All Chapter 5 dialogue (plus Intermission)
  • All Chapter 6 dialogue
  • All Chapter 7 dialogue
  • All Chapter 8 dialogue
  • All Chapter 9 dialogue
  • All Chapter 10 dialogue
  • All Endgame dialogue
  • Ending/Farewells
  • Map Epilogue/Grand Finale
  • Unlockable Opening Demo scenes
  • Endgame Hilda Holy Blood fixed to Minor Vala
  • Bonus Ending scene (for having a Total Rank of A)

Things that still need to be done:
  • Finishing final draft of game script
  • Fixing the game's original critical bugs (Seliph dismounting, Ced's speed, etc.)
  • Anything else I may have missed

Here are some samples of how the game looks so far:

This looks really great. I've actually been playing FE4 recently in anticipation of the new game being release. The test demo you guys have shown looks to be a big improvement over the translation that is currently available, I especially like the new font. Keep up the good work!

Having a nice translation might convince me to slog through the absurdly huge chapters on this game lol

Good work. It will be nice to play FE4 with full item and weapon names.

This looks awesome. :)

Is there any chance you might be able to look at Thracia 776 after this?  From memory, it had a pretty solid script translation but the menus were a hot mess.  I haven't looked at it in years, though, maybe someone's fixed it up and I'm out of the loop.

That's some great news, keep up the work :)

BTW, I once read that the names of the characters didn't had an official translation back then, but now the do. Are you going to use say Lewyn instead of Levin, Ferry instead of Fury and so on?

Thanks everyone, I'll try my best to do the game justice. :)

I don't currently have any plans, but would not be opposed to it. The biggest reason it was easy to accept working on FE4 was because Bookofholsety had been working on their re-translation for 2 years, and it was pretty much done and just waiting to be plugged in.

But if they or anyone else would want to work on FE5 after this, I'd be glad to help out.

That's some great news, keep up the work :)

I'm just using the translations that Bookofholsety provided. They have their own webpage where they posted the translation.

http://bookofholsety.dreamwidth.org/8084.html

I do believe they did take the Nintendo official names into account.

What kind of official localization you use for this patch?
Will you use Levin Sword for Thunder Sword ?

Since this is mainly Bookofholsety's translation, I am simply deferring to their choices. So far, it seems to be based on the official Nintendo translations.

Here is the page containing the script:
http://bookofholsety.dreamwidth.org/8084.html

And here is the page that shows which names they'll be using:
http://bookofholsety.tumblr.com/projectnaga/names

It looks like Thunder Sword will be called "Bolt Sword". But I can ask them to double-check it.

Wow! I'm very impressed! I didn't know that project Naga was in such advanced state!

I read the BookofHolsety translation and it's a definite upgrade!
The new font is great! Didn't know it was possible to have musch less abreviations.

If I remember right, BookofHolsety is aldready retranslating Fire Emblem 5 : Thracia 776. I don't expect much progress until the release of FE4 thought.

I'm really eager to see how the graphics translations are implemented (such as the title screen and the chapters name).

The test demo blew me away, you sir, totally shattered my expectations! I'll be sure to check your other projects!

Oh the graphics are done! You're working so fast! After years of waiting, it's really incredible that the project came so far.

Is it possible to have a screenshot of the new title screen?

It will be so weird to have it translated now!

Thank you. :)  Basically, as long as it can fit on the screen, we will make it work.

I had a feeling that they were looking at FE5, but I never got a chance to ask or verify. I wouldn't mind working on that after this, though it'll be up to them.

I put up an image of the new title screen in the top post.

Me too. :)  I had never finished a Fire Emblem game before, but this one will be my first.

Thanks, though I can't take any credit for the graphics. Those were done by Bookofholsety's friend, who is very good at what he does. :)  We were finally able to sync our work together over the last few days, so now basically I'm the last one left to finish up the coding.

I put up a pic of the title screen in the top post.

The font looks like the modern fire emblem title font (like awakening and FE Fates).

Oh, you! *blushes* Thanks for the shout-out.

Hi, there. Treeofmight a.k.a AzimuthFE here. As DDS said, I have been working on the graphics for the game. They are waiting for bookofholsety's approval, but they're all there. Now I am playing around with the RAM in the final chapter. I am hoping that changing around the RAM contents might change the ending and make it easier to test.

So yeah, that's where the project stands right now. Personally I'm quite excited. Now that our work is synched up, for the first time it feels like the project is beginning to take its final form.

Edit: Since DDS is posting his screens I may as well post mine:

Also, here's an animated version of that title:

That would be awesome! Fire Emblem Thracia 776 is a good game, but the translation patch is unfinished and unprofessionnal (there's 4th wall breaking memes just cause the translator got bored!). Nobody knew how the code worked and that left a very unfinished product:
there's 2 patchs:
One where the story and dialogue translated, but EVERYTHING else is an untranslated mess.
and the other where only the items and menus are translated.

You seemed to have developped new tools to work with FE4, maybe you'll be able to figure this problem that plagued FE5.

All in all, FE4 is looking AMAZING!
