Metal Slug for the win.

I also love me some King of Fighters.

KoF falls in that place where I prefer like, 98 UM and 2002 UM. I actually own 13 but can't run it on my toaster.

I think my KOF list is something like this: 98 > 99 > 97 > MI-2 > XI >  '03 > MI-1 > '01 >'02. I haven't played 94-96 enough to make a judgment on them. 97 has the heaviest presence in my local arcades, so its ranking is probably based more on availability than anything, and I've never actually seen a XII or XIII machine. However, I think '01 and '02 were both pretty hideous and find no pleasure in them.

I'm not a huge arcade gamer, but everytime I do open up Mame for whatever reason I end up playing NeoGeo games pretty much exlusively. They have the perfect balance between presentation and playability. Newer stuff emulated on Mame is usually butt ugly early 3D and I was never a fan of Street Fighter so SF3 doesn't get me to ignore NeoGeo either.

My favourite is Garou - Mark of the Wolves.

Michael Jackson's Moonwalker.

No, seriously. I bust this out at parties and everyone ends up in tears they're laughing so hard. Michael saves children, makes funny noises, turns into a robot after touching a monkey, uses dance bombs, and fights phallic mechs that have pelvic thrusts for attacks. It's great.

I'm gonna be boring and say Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior, in all its totally unbalanced glory.

I just can't help but get pumped when I'm bustin' out combos on the thing. :D

It is a lovely game. Whether just for kicks or otherwise.

I played through it just for kicks once, and I was suprised that it was actually not too shabby a game. I had much worse expectations going into it, so I was pleasantly surprised.

Hey, no biggie. It's a classic!

I grew up with the SNES version. To this day I have never played the arcade version.

Are there any benefits (whether subjectively or objectively) to the arcade original?

All of Metal Slug series.
Street Fighter III: The Third Strike.
Street Fighter Zero 3.

Though there's probably some more whose name I cannot currently remember.

Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun! Someone comes and beats up your friend at the start of each stage and it is your job to beat them up in revenge! Then he gets stabbed with an icepick... Yeah dunno why he didn't end up in the hospital but after the final battle he comes up and shakes your hand so hes fine and dandy I guess?

I love the beat 'em ups.
Try these if you haven't.
The King of Dragons
Alien VS Predator
The Simpsons
X-Men
Killer Instinct

Hmm... one of those isn't quite like the others.

If I'm going to recommend beat 'em ups to anyone, they'd be:
Night Slashers
Guardians/Denjin Makai II
Undercover Cops(Alpha Renewal)
Dungeon magic
Ninja Baseball Bat Man
Violent Storm(here's a Konami recommendation)
Battle Circuit (and one form Capcom)
Armored Warriors (and another from Capcom)
Warriors of Fate(one more from Capcom)
Maybe the stuff from IGS as well(Knights of Valour series, Oriental Legends series, and The Gladiator/Road of Sword/Shen Jian)

I didn't mean to suggest that Killer Instinct was a beat 'em up.
My post was meant to mean "I like beat 'em ups, and by the way here is my list of recommendations as per the topic."

Haven't tried some of these, I just might do that.

Yeah, hope you don't take it as an attack or something, but as a beat 'em up fan myself, I get sick of seeing the same old nostalgia games considered the best. Sometimes you really gotta step outside your comfort zone with an open mind, and in my opinion the best come from the developers you don't expect.

The Denjin Makai series(includes Ghost Chaser Densei, something of a port of the first Denjin Makai on the Super Fami) for example, is by WinkySoft, of the Robot Wars series.

Ninja Baseball Bat Man and Undercover Cops(also ported to the Super Fami) are by Irem, who's beat 'em up input you'd most associate with Kung Fu/Spartan X and Vigilante.

Night Slashers is by Data East, who you'd think of Bad Dudes/Two Crude Dudes when it comes to beat 'em ups.

Dungeon Magic is by Taito... You do not want to play the majority of their beat 'em up input... Another good one by them though, is Warrior Blade: Rastan Saga Episode III, never left Japan, plays similarly to Golden Axe(still worth checking out if you're not into GA).

Those are some great suggestions.

[urlhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFn3NTvQpCQ]Warriors of Fate[/url] was in one of the arcades I used to frequent. Sadly, about 2/3 of the arcades that were open here five years ago have closed, and I think that was one of them.

Warrior Blade looks great as well. Two monitors wide. Would love to see that in an actual arcade.
