Ghetto Warrior (Hack of Dragon Warrior/Quest 1)

My next official project, already underway, is an orchids-out Expansion / Total Conversion of the original installment in the Dragon Quest/Warrior series. It follows the adventures of an urban youth as he travels to various locations across the IRL continental United States. So far, the mapper has been upgraded to MMC5 and the ROM likewise expanded. I'm also using the 8x16 sprite option for larger characters.

The time has come for a specific decision to be made. My rotoscoped Overworld came out to 5488 x 2912 pixels, which equates to 343 x 182 in-game "squares". (The player travels roughly 9½ miles every time he moves from one square to another.) I can go with this, or I can go with a smaller, less formal "overworld" that merely serves as the central hub connecting various regions together. The advantage of this latter option would be to allow even greater resolution of the regions themselves, up to and including accurate rivers and freeways. It also dovetails with the plot, which envisions a Balkanized America circa 2020-ish. 

I split the continental U.S. up into various sub-regions in a manner that made sense both culturally and circumscribed-within-rectangle friendly. I wound up with 17 new rump countries, six of which used to be singular states. Only once did I make a division within prior state lines.


Thoughts? Suggestions/corrections??

Sounds exciting. Dragon Warrior was another one of my favorites growing up. I got my copy from that Nintendo Power promotion back in the day.

I don't suppose you're crazy enough to include locations from all 50 states? I'm interested in how my state would be represented, but alas there isn't a lot here.

Edit: by the way, I think I'd prefer your overworld hub idea

Just about! While Alaska & Hawaii aren't currently within the scope of the hack's vision, and I really didn't see anything ghetto-worthy in either Vermont or New Hamster, I spent several months in 2014 painstakingly mapping-out 120 cities from the other 46 states! (The game allows for ~255 unique "areas", and this is well-within such confines.) What's your area?

lol, I can't help but to notice that the only area to retain it's real name is Texas.  As they say "Don't mess with Texas" (of course that's an anti littering slogan slapped around the states roadways).

You'll have to put a boss in Texas by the name of "Grimlock" if you're aiming for true authenticity...  ;D  8)

The Four Bears Casino in ND and its surrounding questionable village would make a great stronghold for a local slumlord in the new world order.

So I have this file I made years ago trying to create monsters for a modified D&D type game I was playing with friends. I based all of the enemies off of Dragon Warrior enemies form the first 4(IIRC) games. I've often thought about creating a DW hack with these sprites but I'm still not super knowledgeable about ROM expansion and what not. Anyway

Most of them are probably just straight sprite rips but I added some little touches here and there to remove some of the palette swap and reverse the sprite monotony. Not sure if you can/want to use it but don't hesitate if you see something you like or whatever just let me know.

Chpexo- I'll keep your offer in mind! Right now, about the only enemy types I've conceived are (1) STD's, (2) Streetwalkers and (3) Law Enforcement types. (And that latter race was pretty much entirely the work of Rotwang.) I'm totes-open for suggestion(s)!

MayorFunky- I'ma definitely take a close look at that file sometime Wednesday (when I'm sober & cogent).
Once I untie the Gordian meta-knot that is the original game (it makes ridiculous use of the BRK command), this project should unfurl as a veritable production playground.

Looks good. The casino would be right about where that lone tree on the west side is. If you decide to include it, unless things change with the restructuring of the US, it would probably be very nice inside but surrounded by trash and stray dogs  ;)

Yeah sounds like you might not be looking for fantasy monster type things but I thought I'd offer. Even if there's anything that looks like it could be tweaked into what you're looking for.

It's basically a more detailed rendition of the PR Whore enemy from the first level of Donner Party. She's been made to be more voluptuous, and is flipping off someone with her right hand.
