Difference between Gameboy and NES 2bpp graphics?
« on: September 27, 2014, 07:33:52 am »
I'm aware that the graphics on the Gameboy and the NES are both 2bpp. Furthermore I realize that they both are planar (every even numbered byte 0,2,4,6,8,etc defines bit0 for a corresponding set of 8 pixels and every odd numbered byte 1,3,5,7,9,etc defines bit1 for a corresponding set of 8 pixels). However there are differences, as tile editors for hacking game graphics definitely display the graphics differently when set for Gameboy mode versus NES mode. Can somebody here explain the difference in the format for me? Thanks in advance.

Simple. NES stores all 8 lines for plane 1 followed by all 8 lines for plane 2, while GB stores as you describe (stores the two lines together, so plane 1 line 1 is followed by plane 2 line 1, then plane 1 line 2, etc.)
