After playing the 2nd beta release I gotta say, this is the best ROM hack I have played since Infidelity released his Legend of Link hack of Zelda. Everything is just awesome!  ;D

Awesome teaser! I'll gladly give this a good try once its out! It totally looks and feels like a different game and not many rom hacks reach that status.

I feel like I'm indebted to the hack authors and I haven't even played this yet. Maybe I can repay you in my own special way. :happy: We'll figure something out.

We're very close to completion!  The actual gaming environments are complete (maybe just a couple tweaks remaining).  Currently we're getting the menus finalized and the game ending graphics and credits together.  The music is 100%.

We plan on doing one last beta test session before releasing v1.0.  With that we hope to weed out any remaining bugs.  We accomplished quite a bit with the last beta testing session.  A lot of minor level design fixes and general difficulty balancing resulted.  The ASM changes were pretty rock solid with just a few tasks generated from the testing, mostly already corrected at this point.

The initial release may have some unpredictable behavior on original hardware.  Snarfblam is planning on fine tuning everything to optimise compatibility.

July is possible but August could be the month, if I understand correctly that would place the release on the exact 30 year anniversary of Metroids release.  It all depends on how much free time we have to work on the project.  For me this is a pretty busy time of year so I'm a bit limited on time.  Snarfblam has been making some pretty significant progress recently though so everything is moving forward nicely.

EDIT: We're also experimenting with modifying the running animation.

Just out of curiosity is the patched rom bigger than the original rom? Was there any mapper conversions involved ?

Very good idea. Just make sure that there are some people involved in the testing that were not involved in the making otherwise you might end up with a hack like Parallel Worlds.

Yes, the mapper was converted from MMC1 to MMC3.  The change allowed room for some significant improvements over the original including greatly enhanced music, larger and more detailed environments, and more room for additional code.

There's something that I forgot to ask.

If "Rogue Dawn" is gonna have a save system, how will that work? Will there be save units in this game like in Metroid II, Super Metroid, and the GBA Metroid games?

I ask this because when I played the Metroid: mOTHER hack, it said that the hack contained save files like the FDS version of Metroid. But I didn't know how to save in that hack. No units, and no guide telling on how to save there.

So I will ask again, how will the save system work in this hack?

Metroid was one of my favorite games back in the 80's, and I often cited it when people asked me what my favorite game was. This hack definitely has that dark Metroid vibe going on and the improvements are astounding. The addition of slopes does help the environments feel a lot more organic and the graphics are as good as it gets on NES. Superb work!

I'm with others who desire a version without the map. It was something that I didn't like seeing in Super Metroid, since I really like becoming acquainted with an environment and eventually memorizing it out of necessity or familiarity.

Trax:  We're working on the ending right now, as a matter of fact I just finished some of the graphics today.  It'll be much better than the original.   :thumbsup:

John Enigma:  There will be instructions displayed on the main menu on how to access the save feature in game.

Avicalendriya:  There has been quite a few requests for this, I may do a simple graphics change to exclude the map for those who choose to go without.  Snarfblam may have a simple ASM tweak that could achieve this as well.  It makes it more complicated on us though to maintain multiple versions of the game if updates are required.  We'll see, this might happen.

chikadubi:  I think you're in luck, we're very close to completion.
