Hello,

Hiei- and I worked on a translation of the Phantasy Star II remake on the Playstation 2.

So far, Hiei- translated the entire script, but some (very few) dialogues don't make sense.

We're stuck on this one :

Quote
// text, start = 31ec, size = 78
ラファエル
バイオシステムは,ふき抜け構造になっておってな…
そこから,あの恐ろしい地下室に通じているんじゃよ。[wait]

A little context : the Biosystem is a laboratory which is supposed to have prduced monsters, and you're asked to investigate it.

Thanks for any help

There is a stairwell structure in the Biosystem... it leads to that dreadful basement.

(something like that, I think)
we are in a horrible and deadly danger

Thank you ! I see what is refered to :)

Another piece of text which is strange :

Quote
ネイ…
つまり「〜に非ず」という意味を持つ
これらの武具を全て集めたなら
私は君を,アリサの子孫と認めよう。

A little context : the preceding dialog refers to the word "Nei", which is both the name of one character (semi-human), and a prefix to the best equipment of the game (Neisword, Neishot, Neicrown, ...). I don't know if there's a link between the two.

In this case, it's the prefix that is refered to. This passage should give the meaning of this prefix. The "Nei" wepons and protections are said to be very good equipment, then empowered by the Esper and his followers (whatever an Esper may be).

So "ふき抜け" is "stairwell" ? Nice to know (I even asked a professional translator, one of Pokemon, which lived in Japan during a few years and even him didn't know that  :o).

Because JWPCE dictionnary was giving that : "吹き抜く 【ふきぬく】 (v5k) to blow through, to blow over, to blow itself out", which wasn't giving any sense in this context.

I'll just leave this here...

(Seriously, Weblio's dictionary is a great resource. The JWPCE dictionary is kind of hit-or-miss.)

Yeah, I know this website (in fact, that's the one I use the most when I search some infos about something because it give some examples of the use in sentences which is pretty nice) but it only have one reference for "stairwell" (the first one) so I supposed it was not okay. I asked the translator I talked about in my previous post and he supposed it was a "windblown structure" as we didn't how much context but it wasn't really making sense in the game).

By the way, Tryphoon finally understand the context it's not a stairwell in the game but just a well where you jump into.

Thanks for the help.

And about the other sentence?

No problem. I'll take a crack at that other sentence. :)

ネイ…
つまり「~に非ず」という意味を持つ
これらの武具を全て集めたなら
私は君を,アリサの子孫と認めよう。

Nei...
Basically, it means "non-."

acknowledge you as Arisa's descendant.

Raah. So a "Neisword" is a "non-sword" ? I wonder what it means... I'll see if there are further clarification later.

Thank you :)

That's what it looks like, yeah. Also, I'd go with "Nega" (like "Nega-Sword") instead of "Non" just because it sounds cooler.

So for this one, I had the same translation  ;) (that's "Nei" means "No").

I wonder what the writers smoked :D

One other bothering sentence (likely the last) :

Code: [Select]
まさか,[green]ウーゾの島[white]に行くつもり?
やめておいたら? 絶対に無理よ!
あの島は,賢者の修行場所とされているんだから![wait]

Don't tell me you're thinking of going to Uzo Island!
Forget it! There's no way!
It's a training ground for sages/espers/sorcerers/etc!

By the way, there was some talk above about the term 吹き抜け. Since in the game it's just a big hole, I'd probably call it a "ventilation shaft". You could render the whole dialog (without the old man speech style) as:

Biosystems is built around a big ventilation shaft. It leads all the way down to that creepy basement.

So you translated this sentence like me ;) (but it's always cool to have a double check)

The problem is that we don't really know to who they refer with the "sages" (kenja) wor as they also talk about espers in the game but they use the esper (english word) in katakana, so it would imply those are different peoples.

"Kenja" is what's used in the Japanese translation of the English "philosopher's stone" (賢者の石), but that's probably not much help.

Yup, that's what I said to him :)

Well, I said to him that he could modify the sentence if he wants to.

It's not an important sentence at all in the game script, so it wouldn't be a big deal.

Just wondering if this could also be a reference to nothingness (as in "Null Sword")?
I do not speak Japanese. So this may just be off by a long shot.

The thing is that I wonder if it may be a reference to the 1st episode.

There are relatively few dialogs totally disconnected from anything (except obvious ones) in this game. There are references to past and future events from the game, to the Phantasy Star II Text Adventures (obscure games that haven't been officially launched outside of Japan) and to Phantasy Star 1.
