Super Mario World (Extended)
« on: July 16, 2015, 02:31:00 pm »
Hey,

I have been working on a small project similar to that of the hack for Sonic 2 Genesis where the beta levels were restored back into the final release.

Only I thinking in terms of Super Mario World more or less and minus the beta part.

Basically what I am working on is an extended version of the game where there are more levels to play.

I have been watching a few You Tube videos where there are claims that you can find a "Super Secret Level" on the small island near the top of the map to get some super power or something.

They are all hoaxes obviously.

So what I am thinking here is and most likely I am not the only one thinking this.
Considering I have seen lots of hack attempts to do it.

Is to basically create a hack where you can go to a level up there but also some other locations where as a kid I really wondered why there were not levels in certain locations.

The map makes it look like there should be but just isn't.

So what I have been working on is creating levels where there are none and designing custom ideas for them.

Right now I am still getting used to the programing and such.
But have started to throw some ideas together.

Here is a couple pics........

This idea was attempted before.  There was actually a failed collab on SMW Central based on just this very concept.

That said, you may want to include some of the ideas from this other topic:

http://www.smwcentral.net/?p=viewthread&t=61456

Lots of cool ones (along with some lame hoax videos).

Oh wow,

I like the idea of the ghost house on the island, This totally gives me a bunch of ideas.

The trend I was working with before I saw that website was to have the island have a massive treasure on it.
Like in Mario 64 where you find Yoshi on top of the castle and get 99 Lives.

But using a ghost house could be even better.

What I have so far is a level design using a standard day scene.

I added custom message boxes and a somewhat cryptic puzzle to find approximately 36 Yellow Moon life up items.
In one spot with Yoshi, Referencing Mario 64.

In the puzzle I added, At one point you come across a "P Switch"
After pressing it, A message appears in Gold Coins hinting where to go.

I'm trying to avoid typical hacks where the difficulty is so hard it almost is no fun at all.
Like with tons of enemies and no fun.

I like the ideas on the SMCental Website.

The possibilities are endless.

The only thing I tend to be having a struggle with is the Event Editing.
Creating the animation that occurs after the level is complete.
Because obviously after Top Secret Area is completed there isn't anything that happens afterwards.

The other thing I am trying to avoid is modifying the map to much.
I want it to look as original as possible.

Here's a couple more pics....

After looking at the SMCental Website,

I edited the map just a tad, Though I was limited with the sprite measurements.
I was able to get something close to the result I was aiming for.

This is a pretty cool project, especially that Miyamoto wanted to put more levels in this game in the first place because he felt the game was rushed.

Are there any plans of adding Luigi's sprites from the All-Stars version of SMW to your hack?

After playing so many Mario World hacks over the years it's hard for me to get excited for another one. But your project is one of the exeptions to that rule. :)

The sound of having more levels to go through in the normal SMW fills me with glee haha. Judging by the pics I can tell this is gonna be fun.

Keep up the good work!

I like the concept for this hack, but there's something I'd like to point out.

The perspective in this image is crazy off. You walk onto a bridge on a mountaintop and end up on an island that's behind it. I know the Mario World map isn't 100% perspective-correct in some areas, but this is pretty glaring.

The screenshot reminds me of Super Mario 128 Central's April Fools article about a secret in Super Mario World that was discovered, which unlocked at least two secret levels that were harder than the Special Zone and feature a rematch against Bowser.

I often thought it would be pretty cool if you could somehow climb down the cliff from Donut Secret 2 into the Valley of Bowser, but that would involve some really odd perspective stuff.
This signature is an illusion and is a trap devised by Satan. Go ahead dauntlessly! Make rapid progres!

Do you think I should take out the bridge.
It does look weird because the mountain is only half the other mountain but connected at the top.
The other thing that worried me was jumping from the top bypassing Vanilla Dome and ending up through the warp pipe to a place with no where to go inside the Vanilla Dome.

Actually I might just remove that bridge.
Now looking at it, It just looks wrong. lol.

Take out the bridge and have Mario walk over an illusion like in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.

Have you thought about how the new area will be accessed? Looks like the first pics indicate a secret exit in the Top Secret area - if so, then the path should lead from there (that's usually how it works in SMW).
Ongoing project: "Final Fantasy IV: A Threat From Within"

Latest Demo

Yes,
It goes from Top Secret Area directly to the island.
However as of right now I don't know exactly how to incorporate the event to make the path visible.
So Mario walks into the water with the water animation.
And walks up the ladder but walks over the green land.
I'm hoping to crack the event so it will reveal a path.
But I'll focus on that later on.

I have a question if anyone knows....

When I was looking at the map for the Valley Of Bowser,
I found a unused Switch Palace located on the left of the map.
Its in the color red.
So I am guessing either it was meant to be another color that never got used or is the original spot for the Red Palace??

Does anyone know what the story behind that is?
And if it is unused. I may try to add it back in.

If anyone knows, Let me know.

Here is the next idea I got.......

Thinking back to Super Mario Galaxy 2 with the whole spiel on Beyond Hell Valley.
I came up with an interesting idea.......I think.

There is a spot in the Forest Of Illusion,

Where and this time it's really obvious, There just should have been a level there.

Only this time I made the level dark and eri, Using the Ghost House theme,
Making the clouds in the sky look like their watching you.

Haven't gotten far yet but here's the start of it.........

Note that the castle is going to get changed.
I just used a Castle first because it happen to be what got clicked.

The hills have eyes.....

I have made something like this, including a final level at that island. A Warp Star became accessible by beating the Bowser Castle Back Door (which was pointless and lame in the original SMW). But the Warp Star only became a Warp Star after beating the final Special World level. Also, the Back Door level was only beatable with all Switch Palaces activated.

It is completely finished. the only bug in it is that the game (very rarely) freezes on the overworld map because the Addmusik program I used is shitty.

If you can do better (which is possible of course), I have some nice suggestions:
-More thematic levels (water, ice, lava, forest, etc.). I did achieve this by changing pallets in levels and adding things like vines in forest themed levels. In this way, you can give levels more atmosphere without changing gameplay in those levels.
-More different music (the original had only four main level themes. My version had main level and overworld themes per world).
-A nice reward for beating the final Special World level, and another thingy behind a (heavily edited) Back Door level. The Back Door was a waste of level space in the original, I think.

Also: No difficulty edits (no gameplay edits in levels would be better for an 'extended' version), but a new, long, special level that only really good SMW players are able to beat. SMW's difficulty is nice. Making it more difficult will just remove the 'extended' idea.

Some more things:
Make Yoshi's House a real level, with a normal and a secret exit. The secret exit can lead to the path with the Yellow Switch Palace (I had the secret goal bar as smoke above the chimney of Yoshi's House).

Now you mention it...
Why are the photos not accessible. I thought I needed an account at Photobucket in order to be able to see the photos.

You could always try TinyPic. That's the site I use for pics. It doesn't seem to like my current setup of new computer + ancient dial-up too well, but it should work just fine for you.

I'm wondering that to, especially all the images he uploaded are no longer available to view.
