Utilities: FF7Tools 1.0 Released
« on: March 31, 2014, 03:58:37 am »
Update By: cebix

The (ingeniously named) FF7Tools 1.0 are now available.

FF7Tools is a suite of command-line translation and hacking tools for the PlayStation 1 version of Final Fantasy VII. It can be used for modding the game, searching for hidden content, and creating fan translations. The main focus of the tools is on the dumping and editing of in-game text.

This first public release of the tools fully supports the Japanese (FF7 International), US, and German PAL versions of the game.

Full Python source code and extensive documentation are included, and contributions are welcome - see the project's GitHub page, below.

May I ask for what extent this is compatible with Square's other PS1 releases?
Last I saw, it can handle the text for FF VIII too.

Oh my, this is probably the most desired tools pack in the romhacking history  :)
Is this working properly, or is it a beta package?

What else is planned for this mod?  Or is this a final?  Also any plans for a GUI?

I hope this isn't the prelude of a flood of 1743 low quality Final Fantasy 7 hacks per month.

Nah, I don't think kids nowadays have the patience to type everything out for an editor. It'll probably just be about 953 low quality FF7 hacks per month.

LOL Leno.  That made me laugh out loud.   ;D

And I hope there aren't a flood of FF7 hacks reminiscent of how many stupid SMW hacks that are out there.

I don't know how to use Python :( I'm curious to see the script and maybe read it on the subway or something, but I don't know what I'm doing. I installed Python and I'm trying to install the CDIO thing, but I can't get it to work.

To no extent whatsoever. I'd be very surprised if the tools worked with any other games (well, except for the TIM2PNG converter, obviously...).

What else is planned for this mod?  Or is this a final?  Also any plans for a GUI?
Planned features include:
  • add support for the English and French PAL releases of the game
  • add the ability to modify text in the Japanese release (if requested)
  • make it possible to replace files in 'bingz' and 'binlz' archives
Apart from this, the tools do everything I need them to do. ;)

Is it possible to install "pycdio" in Windows? I see that it is a required software to use this translation tool.

You should be able to use pip or easy_install to install pycdio.

Thank you, here is a easy to follow guide, in case someone is interested on installing Python:

Version 1.1 is out and adds:
  • support for the English, French, and Spanish PAL releases of the game
  • 'trans' now recalculates the sorting table in the item menu so the "Arrange by name" option works properly when item/weapon/armor/accessory names have been changed

Check the included README, in particular the section "Workflow for translation" near the end.

I can't help with Windows-specific problems, I'm afraid... :-[

Provided that Python is installed in the standard way it shouldn't be necessary to copy the tools (or parts of the tools) anywhere special. Just unzip the archive to your home directory and run the tools from the command prompt, for example:
Code: [Select]
python ff7tools-1.1/untrans --helpor
Code: [Select]
cd ff7tools-1.1
python untrans --help

By the way, you should say in the Readme.txt file that pycdio have the following dependencies:

Quote
apt-get install python-dev
apt-get install libcdio-dev
apt-get install libiso9660-dev
apt-get install swig pkg-config

So probably your software won't work in a Windows SO, right?

PD: Ahhhhh, at last now It's working. First I had to install pycdio 0.19, then I upgraded to pycdio 0.20.

The extracted texts, in case any of you are curious: http://www.mediafire.com/download/9grbqd2wpcmr9jz/txt.zip

Version 1.2 is out which removes the dependency on pycdio, and fixes possible problems with missing padding in the KERNEL.BIN file produced by 'trans'.

Cebix when I try to edit the text, it appears the next error message.
It doesn't matter what text is. I haven't written that "character".

Edit: We tested with linux and windows, and the error is similar.

Make sure that your text files are saved as UTF-8 with no byte-order marks.
