Menu Shock
« on: October 05, 2013, 02:27:38 am »
I'm trying to relax right now and forget about the outside world for a while.

When I go to a restaurant and am handed a menu, I go into shock. I don't really have a food preference; it would be easier and quicker to list the foods I don't like. For that reason, I never really know what I want to get.

This is my typical reaction when faced with too many choices at once, as in, having a large collection of video games at my disposal.

I don't want to think too hard about stuff, but choosing which game to play is really hard for me.

So how do you pick?

I never wanted to work in a pet shop, you know. I wanted to be...a lumberjack.

When I'm not sure what I want to do, I fire up this little Python script I wrote and let the Random Number God decide for me.

Code: [Select]
import random

loop = True
count = 0
choices = []

while(loop):
    nextChoice = raw_input("Enter choice (or leave blank to finish): ")
    if nextChoice == "":
        break
    choices.append(nextChoice)
    count += 1

print random.choice(choices)
raw_input()
In the event of a firestorm, the salad bar will remain open.

As Ryusui said though if you are faced with a bunch of choices of equal consequences (whether the consequences are ultimately trivial or profound) then random is the way forward, protip though is never let a careers teacher see you do that. Though perhaps the instant quip of "all evidence to the contrary" was instead the ill advised route.

As for games the trick may be to be far more discerning -- there are already more games than you will ever be able to play and the number is unlikely to shrink any (quite the opposite in fact) so junk anything that is not doing something you do not want.

Basically: roll a die, count down the list. Adjust random mechanism if number of items is not 6.

I did make it simple.

Step 1. Install Python 2.7, if you don't have it already.
Step 2. Copy and paste the code in my post into a plain text file. Be sure to save it with the extension ".py".
Step 3. Double-click the file to run it automatically. It will prompt you to enter your choices. Enter a blank when you're done. It will then print one of the choices you entered at random.
In the event of a firestorm, the salad bar will remain open.

To be honest, I think that’s kind of involved unless you’ve already got a text file sitting around you can pipe to it.

Backloggery has a fortune cookie option that does the same thing. You can even have it specifically target games you haven't beaten yet.

But I don't use it, personally. I tend to just sort of stare at my games list until I find something that feels right. Usually it's something I haven't beaten yet, and usually it's a genre I haven't dug into recently (no RPGs back-to-back, in other words.) Knowing what I've played recently and what would probably be a fun break rom that helps narrow the choices quite nicely.
