Final Fantasy VII - Translation Help Needed
« on: September 23, 2013, 03:36:17 pm »
Hi, I'm having some trouble translating some names. These names here are the Materia names I'm trying to translate:

まどわす
ひっさつ
いんせき
ふうじる
りだつ
ちりょう

I guess the ふうじる Materia (translated as "Seal") should have a different name, because I've already renamed ふういん (translated as "Contain") as "Sealed". And maybe the ちりょう Materia (translated as "Heal") should renamed as "Treat" or "Treatment", but I don't know which one is better. Any suggestions?

まどわす=Confusion
ひっさつ=Critical
いんせき=Meteorite
ふうじる=Seal
ふういん=Forbidden
りだつ=Depart
ちりょう=Heal
I am the lord, you all know my name, now. I got it all: cash, money, and fame.

"Forbidden" looks pretty good for me. Thanks, Gemini.

Hmm, I'm not sure if "Confusion" is the appropriate term for "madowasu". The Materia does have the Confuse spell, but it also has the Berserk spell. No one gets confused with Berserk, but the affected target attacks uncontrollably.

I did some Google search for the term "Inseki", and I found out that Square translated it as "Starfall" many times, but this is Emperor Mateus' (FF2) signature attack. Do you think that "Starfall" looks good, or should I leave as "Meteorite", the literal translation?

Do you think "ridatsu" is best translated as "Quit"?

I don't think "Critical" is the best name for "hissatsu" (ひっさつ). There's already a status effect named as "Critical" in my retranslation, which was the Near Death status. Maybe "Finisher"?

Hmm... here's some synonyms I could throw out there:

Technique
Vital Strike
Death Touch
Finisher (as you wrote)
Fatal

etc.

There's many more synonyms that one could come up with, but that should give you a bit of a sample pool to start with.

EDIT:
For 'ridatsu', I'd need more context to form an informed opinion, but in most cases, it would not mean 'quit' except in the case of things like "I quit the group for the sake of my own sanity." (The word means to withdraw, retreat, separate, etc.).
For example, it would not mean 'quit' for cases like "I pressed Quit on the application and went home for the day.", as that would be shuuryou (To terminate a computer program).

Thanks for the suggestions, I guess Finisher looks good. Vital Strike and Death Touch are too big to fit in the command window.

And I guess 'Quit' is correct in this context. "Ridatsu" IS something like withdrawing from battle (it was originally translated as 'Exit'). There are two spells in this Materia: Escape (which allows you to escape from battle) and Remove (which removes all enemies from battle).

If you're talking about ひっさつ the command, there's nothing wrong with "Deathblow" as was used in the original translation. It fits.

If it contains both Confuse and Berserk, how about 'Bewilderment'?

Also, what spells are in the りだつ materia? That might help us come up with a better name for you.

Escape (Run away from battle) and Remove (Forces an enemy to run away from the battle).
The Materia was called 'Exit' in the official English translation.

I don't know. I tried to translate "madowasu" using Google Translate, it says it means "delude". I don't trust Google Translate, especially for Japanese. There's an item called "madowashi-sō" (惑わし草, translated as "Loco Weed") in FF7 too, but I have no idea of how to translate it properly. This item makes all enemies confused.

Literally translated, it's something like "Confusion Herb" or "Deception Herb".

草 can also be grass or weed. So Loco Weed really isn't a stretch.

Loco Weed is also slang for Marijuana, but I dunno if the original translators knew that, given they were Japanese.

if you want any extra takes on them:

まどわす - Muddle/Bewilder
ひっさつ - Finisher
いんせき - Meteorite
ふうじる - Impede/Inhibit
ふういん - Seal / Sealed/Forbidden
りだつ - Disengage
ちりょう - Treatment/Recover

i'm not totally sure on whether they were going for the idea that the ふういん materia contains sealed/forbidden abilities, or whether the abilities themselves seal enemies (as freeze and break certainly do), or both.

to avoid confusion (ha ha...) with existing series terminology that refers to different things, you probably want to avoid "Confuse"/"Confusion", "Remedy", and "Heal".

The Materia is sealed probably because its spells are too strong, and that's it. Flare is the only spell in this Materia that doesn't inflict status.

"Treatment" looks good, even though it takes more space than "Heal".
I agree with "Finisher".
"Bewilder" is better than "Bewilderment" or "Muddle".
"Meteorite" is literal, but it's good.
I think that "Seal" is better for ふうじる, it takes less space.
As for りだつ, I think that "Retreat" is better.

EDIT: There are other Materia I'd like to talk about too. Some Support and Command Materia are a little difficult to translate.

you can't possibly want both a Seal and a Sealed materia. go with Impede+Sealed, or Seal+Forbidden, or something... Seal+Sealed is just silly :P

as for Retreat, that's a bad choice of word as it doesn't quite convey the likely intended meaning of the kanji, given the (offensive) degeon spell being in there. you probably want a word with a meaning something along the lines of split [apart], separate, divide, diverge, etc. how about "Rift"?

It'll be Seal and Forbidden.

"Rift" looks nice (I guess). There are other Materia I'd like to talk about too. These were hard for me to translate, and I'm not sure if the translations are good:

ぜんたいぎり -> Wide Slash/Bladeblitz (previously Slash-All)
れんぞくぎり -> Multi-Cut (previously Double Cut)
まほうみだれうち -> Magic Barrage (previously Quadra Magic)
すべてぜんたいか -> Mega All(?)
マジカル -> Magical (previously Magic Plus)
ラッキー -> Lucky (previously Luck Plus)
スピード -> Speed (previously Speed Plus)
