TwinBee Rainbow Bell Adventure nomenclature
« on: September 17, 2013, 05:24:03 pm »
TheMajinZenki and I are having some problems with TwinBee nomenclature. This is more of a localization issue than a translation issue, I guess.

1) In established series chronology are pilots Light, Pastel, and Mint who are in control of the TwinBee, WinBee, and GwinBee mechanicals respectively. They appear in RBA as portraits talking with Dr Cinnamon between stages and in the ending. However, they're never actually referred to by name - the game's script simply refers to them as TwinBee, WinBee, and GwinBee, even when they're plainly Light, Pastel, and Mint. So the question ends up being, how do we go about naming the characters? Do we call them by their established human names or by the machines they pilot?

2) The villain's name is ワルモン. Established English-language canon seems to have him as "Warumon" which sounds a little engrishy to me. Do we go with that? TheMajinZenki's suggested "Dr Badd."

3) In the end credits all of the developers are referred to as nicknames. In the end credits of the EU version, they're listed under their real names. Do we do nicknames or real names?

1) I'm not too sure about this, but it definitely seems odd to refer to them by ship name.

2) I agree with MajinZenki's idea, but not the name he chose. Find something that sounds funnier.

3) In the original Mega Man series, the people in the credits often used nicknames and they were left that way. I don't see why you should change it.

According to Pennywise, it appears to be series convention for the characters to refer to each other by ship name. So that's that, I guess?

I'm all for leaving the names as nicknames, but the fact remains that they were properly credited in the EU release. It's just a tilemap though; I could always put both in.

Yeah, if you find yourself not able to choose one, do both. (Name "Nickname" Last Name) would be fine.

Area names, with likely puns or plays on words:

ヘコポンアイラン
キラリンダンジョン
イーストウッズ (もりとみずうみのエリアじゃ。)
ガチャポコゾーン (it's a mystery area! nobody knows why, that's why it's a mystery area! oh god the cyclical logic)
オーロラマウンテン
ワルモンラボ

Characters/bosses:
デブンビー
ニセツインビー

Pennywise's suggestion for ワルモン was salt or something similarly bitter, as an anti-Cinnamon (protagonist professor.) I'm considering Wormwood to satisfy both the bitter herb and the evil-sounding-name requirements.

About Dr. Warumon: As far as I know the PAL Versions refer to him as Dr. Murdock in the manuals.

I have save states at the end with different percentages to get all the endings, in case anyone needs them for testing purposes.

Aww crap, I used ZSNES to play the game... well, you can load the saves in ZSNES, then generate the battery save (.srm) and load those on whatever emulator you use. You just have to defeat the last boss to see the ending. (Or just do the ending cheat.)

ZSTs are fine! I actually find ZSTs *more* useful than 9X savestates for hacking purposes; the format is friendly and RAM is always in the same place. Thanks :)

So, okay, bumping this. A few things:

1) We went with Wormwood for Warumon, it being a bitter herb (as opposed to Cinnamon, the ally doctor, who's named after a sweet herb.)
2) Murdock is a different villain entirely. Good point though!

For the following, here's what was decided upon:
ヘコポンアイラン -> Sodaspring Island
キラリンダンジョン -> Twinkling Cavern
ガチャポコゾーン -> Toytanic Zone

But I still need reasonable localizations for the following bosses. Including youtube links and pattern descriptions where appropriate...
デルンビー ("DelnBee" in roman text above the boss meter)
デブンビー ("DebunBee" It flaps its arms trying to reach the ceiling. When it does, it huts a button that removes all the platforms and sends you falling onto the spikes.)
パカポン ("Pakapon")

- This is a pun, I think. でぶ meaning "fat" and ぶん being the onomatopoeia for "buzz". Not sure how to word that, though.

パカポン ("Pakapon")
- This seems like more onomatopoeia. Watching the video, it seemed like it might be onomatopoeia for what the boss actually does. Cracking their head open and "pop!" it opening.

How about ChubBee for DebunBee and CracklePop for Pakapon?

I'm thinking "BumblBee" and "Egghead" for now, with the latter being more a description of the boss itself than its attack pattern. Still need something for デルンビー though.

ChubBee actually isn't bad. And it's also a terrible pun. Which makes it better.

The other one isn't that great.

And that isn't "デルビー" it's ”デルンビー".
