Strange line (may not be Japanese)
« on: September 05, 2013, 04:19:40 pm »
Hey everybody. I need some help with a line that appears to be some other language expressed in katakana. For context, a researcher has just found out that a sea creature can speak and is trying to get it to talk. I'd rather not mention what game this is for.

The line is:

アーハロウハロウ。フゥエヤァミェーンン・・・

The first part is obviously, "Ah, hello? Hello?" But I'm stuck on the second part. It's definitely not Japanese, and it doesn't look like English, either. Any ideas?
Soon the super karate monkey death car would park in my space. But Jimmy has fancy plans... and pants to match. The monkey clown horrible karate round and yummy like cute small baby chick would beat the donkey.

It probably won't help much, but I do see some English in the second part. Such as 「エヤァ」 = "Air" and 「ミェーン」 = "Men".

Could it be "Hey man..." but just a bit drawn out, like "Heyyyyy maaaaaaaan" ?

I think you might be onto something. Not sure what フゥ is supposed to be, but "hey man" drawn out at least makes sense. Whoever wrote the game's script doesn't know English very well, so it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't get some of the sounds right. Thanks to both of you! :)

Spoiler:
I say the writer is bad at English because there are gems like "You busterd!" and "All works no play Jack" sprinkled throughout the game in J-Ascii.

I think the フゥ is like from the word white spelled as ホワイト where /wh/ is pronounced with a /ho/

Could be "where" like フゥエヤァ or comes down to "where are you" slangish "wer ehyah". Does the speaker have a nationality? B/c as you said, it may not be English at all.  :-\

It's a killer whale IIRC like Orca or Free Willy.

The whale's the creature being spoken to. The speaker is a generic researcher guy who otherwise uses Japanese with some English interspersed.

Also, the whale's voice is coming over a speaker, so "where are you" or some variation seems to fit. BTW, everyone's guesses have been better than mine. I had no idea what the hell to make of this sentence. :P

フゥエヤァ showed up recently in the form of フェーヤー in this year’s college exams, in an excerpt from a 1923 text where some kid is struggling to read some dreadful primer in English not unlike this one. The more memorable weird phrases from that passage turned into a minor meme. Anyway, that’s not really important, but it seems to be “where” or “fair”. Thanks, Internet, for being obsessed with silly phrases. No, seriously. Thanks.

ミェーンン seems to be a very distorted “man”.
we are in a horrible and deadly danger

If the line is being said by a human character, it could possibly be something like "We are men"?

My very first instinct says, "How are you/ya, man?"
