Here is a beta test patch that allows you to play as Simon in 8 Eyes using the whip and Castlevania weapons as a demonstration of how it works in the game.

Looks absolutely amazing! I wouldn't mind seeing an engine like this in some cross platform way (i.e. SDL or Retroarch/libretro)

There are possibilities for all sort of exploration/hack n' slash games with tight controls and cool power-ups. This would have blown people's minds back when the NES was young...

Really, some rom hackers have raised the bar to ungodly heights.

I always thought that 8 Eyes looked and played so much like Castlevania when I play it. You just completed the process. I am curious though, how are you going to work with the second player (the bird) in this game? Also, if Simon dies when playing two players, will it still be a game over, even though the bird is still alive?

The 2nd player or Cutrus will be replaced by a familiar according to the author. Check out the site on the first posting to see what he has planned for replacing the eagle.
