Abandoned: Quest of Ki
« on: May 15, 2013, 07:23:09 am »
Tomato has this abandoned text file for Quest of Ki (pronounced as Kai), the English text is readable but the rest of it are garbled.
Can anyone's computer display the garbled texts correctly?  :(

The English script Tomato left doesn't fit the screen where the text should be inserted. I just got to minimize & improvise.
I'm at 1/4 of the script.

If I recall, the text was in EUC format. But I'm not certain.
Also, I think more often translators will usually leaving resolving formatting issues (like screen space) to the ROM hackers to figure out. :)

It's Shift-JIS.

Heys, sir!  :woot!: You don't mind that I make reference to the script that was placed in the Abandoned section, do you?
I'm not going to make any fancy asm on it though so a lot of the words I have to rephrase just to fit it in the text lines.
I'm just gonna use WindHex on this one.

It's been so long that I'm amazed no one else has picked up the game in all this time, but feel free to do whatever you want with the stuff I posted! If I recall right, part of the script dump that was given to me was corrupt, so you might want to look out for that, but details are super fuzzy so I might be thinking of another game.

That is really Engrish.
With Google, I get "Thus Ki headed to the dangerous Tower of Druaga, finally starting 'The Quest of Ki'".

But if you want to shorten it, at least change it to "Ki's journey in the Tower of Druaga"
(at least I'm assuming the game takes place in that tower)

And it looks like FCEUX doesn't like this game. Too bad.
(at least the no-intro ROM, which FCEUX reports the MD5 as 0x6bd900b4f8f7fd41164b2ee14c088605, really glitches up when the game starts. Though it seems fine on Nintendulator and Nestopia.)

Yeah, its ENGRISHILICIOUS  :P

I'm following Tomato's script, so that paragraph is not altered by character limit (I think). And there are other untranslated script that I need to tackle after Tomato's.

About the ROM, is it a graphical glitch where the backgrounds garbled? I found a clean copy out there.  :-X

Yes, it's a glitched background.
I'd assume FCEUX error as the other two should be more accurate.

Turns out the ROM in the no-intro set I downloaded had a bad header (byte 6 should be 41) while the GoodNES dump has a good header.
Looks like no-intro only catalogs the non-header data.

So a little update. I'm almost done with Tomato's script. But not all of them are translated, like this one:

ちょっとうしろをむきなさい
あなたってよくみると
げんぺいとうまでんの
かなめいしにそっくりよ

It seems to tell about horses & genpei
Also, there are some off-topic lines like the about Italian food

Whats left are the dark dragons' lines & the credits.

It sounds like it's saying that you look like a "kanameishi" (which translates to "keystone") from the Namco game Genpei Toumaden, although as I've never played it I have no idea what it's referring to.

I the only English appearance of that game was Namco Museum Vol. 4 for PS1 ("The Genji and the Henke Clans", I think they called it).

Does anyone knows what this translates to?

おお ゆうしゃカイ!
しんで しまうとは なんと
いなかものじゃ

ごめんなさい
ちょっと ふざけただけよ

It sounds like a very, very bad joke about those who live in the countryside.  :(

I don't know much about it, but it seems to be a direct quote from Dragon Quest 3. According to this site (http://www.geocities.jp/hoppygeo/DQ3/DQ3message.html) the king of Edinbear says it when you die. Everyone in the town seems to call you a bumpkin too for some reason.

Quoted from the link:
Quote
死んでしまうとはなんと田舎者じゃ!

Thanks for the inputs, Tomato.

Whoa! The words are the same as in Quest of Ki. Isn't it this a (strange) Japanese idiom or something?  :o

Btw, I was wondering that some of the leftover untranslated parts were really unused scripts in the game, right?

I got this one translated &, in my own understanding, is what one of developers logging to himself:

おおゆきのひは おとなしくうちで ねてるんだな!
との おおゆきで しゅっぺいが できません

Big snowy day, we're going to sleep soundly!
We can't go out because of the heavy snow.

I revised it as:
It's a snowy day. We'll just stay indoors & sleep all day. (Maybe its something around those lines)

Oh, and I understand that Italian Tomato is a restaurant which was a subsidiary of Namco at that time? Its funny that they went into in-game advertising.  :D

It says something like "We can't dispatch because of all the snow, so I figure we should just crash all day" (しゅっぺい can mean "to dispatch troops", so while I'm unsure of the context that's what I went with). Maybe a bit less colloquial than that, Japanese politeness levels aren't really my thing, but your translation is good from what I can see.

大雪の日は大人しく家で寝てるんだな!
殿、大雪で出兵ができません。

According to what I’ve found here and there, it’s something Ishtar says, and it seems to be a quote from the game Dokuganryū Masamune. But hell if I’m gonna track that down :P

Looking for images for "kaname ishi" & I just realized that those are those sacred stone thingies that you see from shrines like these

I think Ishtar is making a comparison on when Ki turned to a stone that looked like a kaname-ishi from Genpei Toumaden. Though IDK which game platform this game is from OR if these stones really look like Ki-stone.  :P

Ugh, more in-game trivia quotes that are too obscure for gamers to actually remember. And a strategy game at that  ::)

Anyways, I have to replay the game to see if these texts actually appear in the game, or just unused scripts. Phew!  :-[
