Princess Crown (Saturn) English Translation
« on: February 27, 2013, 09:44:36 am »
Hey guys,

I figured with the rash of Saturn translation projects I've been seeing of late maybe it was best to start posting some info and progress about PC before someone else decides to take it up. Anyways, this is a project that SamIAm and I have been working on and off since 2012.

Our current progress is regularly updated at on the GitHub wiki at:
https://github.com/cyberwarriorx/pcrown/wiki/ProjectProgress

Here's some screenshots for those interested:

Feel free to ask any questions.

As an aside, I'm also a major Yabause contributor. For those that don't know, Yabause is a multi-platform Saturn emulator. We've added several features hackers/translators may find useful so if you're interested you may want to take a look at http://yabause.org

04/01/16: Current status update. Let's see if anyone notices ;)
08/16/17: Changed progress status to link to wiki page

This looks fantastic.  I have wanted to play this game in English forever.  Hope the project goes well!

I hope I can play it in iso format and won't be required to track down the cd like with the Y's 4 dub.

I've played Princess Crown a few times over the years, and I can safely say that we have a nice, complete dump of all the text in the game that doesn't appear in battles or in the menu. I've translated everything already, and at this stage am going through it again and editing. I hope to polish the script to a shine after seeing how things look in the game itself.

It's exciting because once the inserter gets going, the every dialogue box in the whole game will be in English right then and there. The battle and menu stuff doesn't appear to be too complicated, either. Here's what it looks like in action:

Please lend a hand if you can! CyberWarriorX and I have been at it for the better part of a year now, and progress has been fairly steady, but we could really use the help.

Thank you, now you can finally put my Vanillaware to good use. Good thing I still kept my copy.

This translation has great potential I can see. Good luck with it.

I don't want to dig up ancient history, but as I recall, CyberWarriorX was lending a hand with the short-lived Tengai Makyou IV translation. I'd love to see that one translated someday.

Pikachumanson: The patching procedure is still a bit of a work in progress right now. I'm generating patches against a bin/cue copy that I have, but ideally I'd like to be able to support multiple images. I wrote a couple of utilities for the project for extracting data off the disc and rebuilding the disc that could easily be tweaked for other images if I end up going that route. If anyone has some good advice, I'd be happy to hear it.

Zoel: Wow! Nice collection  ;D

MathUser2929: I've posted what information I can which I hope helps. Though I really don't have the extra time to take up another project right now.

Pennywise: I'd like to see that one translated too someday.

It's an action RPG similar to many of their other games, such as Muramasa and Odin Sphere.

Seeing your investment into Saturn emulation I guess you don't plan to do the PSP version of Princess Crown as well? Is that one even up to par, or maybe even better?

At least I recall that the PSP version of Tengai Makyou IV is considered the definitive one. I pondered working on that once, but at the time it didn't run on any PSP emulator (not sure if it does now, though).

The PSP version is windowed rather than being expanded to take advantage of the wider screen. It's also, to my knowledge anyway, functionally and aesthetically no different from the Saturn version. On top of this, the Saturn version is probably more accessible thanks to the relatively advanced state of Saturn emulation, and is in my opinion preferable simply by virtue of not being on a handheld.

If someone wants to use my translation for a PSP version, that would be fine, but I'm much more enthusiastic about getting the Saturn version done.

I sunk some time into Princess Crown a few years ago, and found it to be a fun game.  I'm glad this project went "somewhere" so to speak.

Yes, this project finally surfaces!

CyberWarriorX and SamIAm, thank you for picking this project up!
Odin Sphere was one of my favorite PS2 games and it always killed me that the original was never playable in English.
I wish you the best of luck with this game! Love this attention towards the Saturn,

look at that sexy beast!

and won't be required to track down the cd like with the Y's 4 dub.
?
You don't need the original disc for the Ys IV dub.

Actually the original source code had been lost, so they opted to run the saturn version in an emulator on the PSP, this is also the reason that no company wants to officially localize it, it would just be too much work and money to do without the source code.

@Burnt Lasagna so I could have just patched it to my iso instead of just burning a copy?   :banghead:

This is neat! Bravo.
CWX, I definitely recall your name from somewhere, though I admit given the timeframe that I'm a little hazy on exactly where that was. Remind me?

Wasn't he one of the first people to try to hack a Saturn game? Langrisser 3, I think.

Likely it was either Langrisser 3 or Farland Symphony. IIRC we've also chatted on irc before, though I'm also somewhat hazy on that.

Not completely, it seems a few files have been replaced in the PSP (like the font).
