Dunno why I never thought of using this before, but would anyone see a problem with calling these "Mythical Beasts"?

I wouldn't say there's anything wrong with that translation per se, but it does sound a bit generic. Actually, most translations of this form (adjective + noun) do. If you'd hypothetically imagine that those creatures were real I highly doubt there wouldn't exist a more unique name for them. That's why I liked translations such as Aeons or Eidolons (sure, they just stem from different languages, but still they're not as generic).

I agree with you on that, but Eidolon has always rubbed me the wrong way. I feel like the term definitely deserves it's own unique name, but it's hard to find one that suits them.

Cryptids works well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptid
I saw that, actually. The only problem is that it would work for MOST of them, but not all. A Cryptid by it's very definition is some sort of animal. So certain summons that are human-like would not fit this description (Ramuh, Shiva, etc).

It also covers plants as well... But if there are gods to be summoned, then "Mythical Beasts" doesn't really fit either. :-p

Why not just "Legends"?

Why not just "Legends"?
While I actually like the sound of it, the fact that we have a word in English that is the same thing but means something else, it doesn't work out right.

"Land of Legends", "King Baron: You are hereby ordered to attack one of the Legend clan.", etc.

"Land of Legends" sounds fine to me. It fits all possible contexts, and is alliterative to boot.

And shame on you for using "clan" in English dialog. It's a horrible word and in no way conveys the correct sense of kinship shared through both species and brotherhood (or possibly it does, but far too forcefully.) The the resultant text ends up sounding far too stilted and dry. This is an instance where good localization would eschew the word entirely and bring the meaning across through turn of phrase and insinuation. That said, I can see how "Legend" would be a problem in this particular case, but it's nothing a good wordsmith couldn't write his or her way around. Use a name, if known. If not, a title suffices, whether specific or vague. "King Baron: A leader amongst the Legends lives in/can be found in [place]. Your orders are to kill it!"

Well, there's a reason the script isn't final. :P

I do need a really good editor. T_T;

I'm sitting here, thinking of Yu-Gi-Oh!, and the name "Fabled Ones" springs to mind. >_>

Honestly, that sounds good. I still kinda want a one-word solution, but if nothing better comes up, mind if I steal that? :D

Most of my research into it points straight to Borges’ book still. It is a calque of “imaginary beings”. So if you want a one word solution, you might as well go for a word that doesn’t imply that they don’t exist when they clearly do in that context. The choice is yours.

(I got really sick of “ones” in a couple of translations I worked on / am working on, I must say. It’s not as invisible a word as I was hoping. And I had nobody to blame for that decision but me.)

How about Chimera?

Interestingly, Thesaurus.com puts it down as a synonym for "illusion."

EDIT: Bonus points!

EDIT #2: You know, seeing that name gives me another suggestion: "Mythic" (plural "Mythics")?

Mythic isn't bad either. Definitely has a good ring to it.

I didn't read the whole thread, but just wanted to share my experiences with this word 幻獣.

I had free reign to do anything I wanted in International Studies class, so I did Greek Mythology for 1.5 years. On mythological beasts like gryphon, sphinx(they enjoyed hearing about Oedipus Complex! Interesting that this is common knowledge to Westerners, but unknown to most Japanese), pegasus, medusa, chimera, minotaur, etc. I named my Powerpoint presentation as ギリシャ神話の幻獣.
