Help with some confusing names from various games.
« on: March 27, 2012, 03:14:47 am »
I'm going to be posting here some items from various games that I can't figure out the significance of to save my life. Hopefully some of you guys have some insight on these that I lack.

To start with here's one from Final Fantasy III for famicom:

RAKKO no atama - sea otter of head - Otter's Head

RAKKO = ラッコ 《海獺; 猟虎; 海猟; 獺虎》 【らっこ】(n) (uk) sea otter (Enhydra lutris)
atama = 頭(P); 首 【あたま(頭)(P); かしら(P); かぶり(頭); こうべ; ず(頭); つむり(頭); つぶり(頭); つむ(頭); かぶ(頭)(ok)】(n) (1) head; (2) (あたま only) mind; brain; intellect; (3) (あたま, かしら only) top; (4) (あたま, かしら only) hair (on one's head); (5) (つむり only) bangs; fringe; (6) (かしら only) top structural component of a kanji; (P)

Item effect: teleports party out of the current dungeon. Same effect as the Exit spell.

And while I'm at it, anybody have any idea what the hell Esuna/Basuna are supposed to mean?

Apparently, ラッコのあたま is supposed to refer to a mushroom that resembles the otter’s head in shape, but even a lot of Japanese players didn’t get it. And a mushroom can warp you because lol video game logic.

A common theory is that Esuna comes from something like 永久(いきゅう)テータスを治(お)す (heal persistent statuses) and Basuna comes from something like トル中テータス異常を治(お)す (heal in-battle statuses). I haven’t seen hard evidence of this, personally, but it’s plausible because that’s what those spells do.

Thanks, that's interesting. Now how the hell do you localize and otter head shaped mushroom? Obvious drug references aside. hehehe.

That's the most plausible explanation for Esuna/Basuna I've ever heard. I guess I'll put that on my list of things to ask Sakaguchi-san.

Edit:
Here's a couple more that I'm not sure of:

hadouhou
From FF3j the first part, hadou, is pretty obvious. the last part isn't very clear because there are a bunch of words that sound like that. My best guess is 砲 which means gun or cannon. So... wave cannon?

sekikanirami
I got nothin' for this one.

makitsuki
roll + moon? I don't get it.

tsuyutaikiri
no clue on this one either.

daibakuhatsu
something about explosive laughter?

touka RE-ZA-
not sure of the first part. the second is katakana and I figure is either razor or raiser.

ankokukaiki
darkness something.

Yup, that's a Wave Cannon all right. It shows up in Secret of Mana, too, as はどう砲.

I would have gone with Ottercap mushroom, as a cap is something that goes on your head and sounds like an actual species of mushroom as well.
Oh and a image search for Otters and mushrooms got us this.
A log of some kind.

The ones I recognized:

sekikanirami
石化睨み - Petrifying Stare

daibakuhatsu
大爆発 - Big Explosion

makitsuki
maybe 巻き付き - Entangle?

Thanks a lot guys. :)

@MontyMole: Is that the actual species of mushroom it refers to you linked to?

@LostTemplar:According to one dictionary this: 巻き付く means "to twine around". So it seems more along the lines of... wrapping around? So maybe bind would be better?

If I could make a suggestion: screencap the words instead of romanizing them, please.

@Kiyoshi: There's nothing to screen cap. I'm reading the data directly from the ROM in a hex editor. Also, it wouldn't make that much of a difference since so far everything is in hiragana and/or katakana. But when I do have stuff that is in kanji I will make sure to post them as such.

I think he means that transcription mistakes are avoided that way. Everybody does them from time to time, so it's a valid point.

Yes, it is 波動砲. You rot your brain with enough video games, you just come to recognize when ほう means “cannon”, I’m afraid. Wave Cannon is the official translation.

tsuyutaikiri
no clue on this one either.
Pretty sure you didn’t get this one down right. I think you meant 冷たい霧 (Cold Mist)

touka RE-ZA-
not sure of the first part. the second is katakana and I figure is either razor or raiser.
透過レーザー (Piercing Laser)

ankokukaiki
darkness something.
暗黒回帰 (something like Return to Darkness; I don’t think it matters, as the name is never displayed, but according to some wiki speculation it could refer to a line of dialogue in the game; cleverly enough, it could, paraphrased so many times, mean “hidden recovery” because that’s what it does)

LostTemplar is close enough on the other ones (except in other installments one is 石化にらみ and the another is 巻きつき).

True enough.

I actually didn't transcribe this one. It's output from a Japanese program that rips and organizes data from the original game automatically. So if it's an error in the program or a typo in the ROM I'm not sure yet. I'll double check it once I have a working table file for FFIVj.
[EDIT] I see why I was having problems. For some reason when I did the search for つめたい, 冷たい wasn't coming up in my results.

Thanks again, everyone, for your help.

No, we looked to see if there was a real mushroom named after an otter but came up blank.  Its just a generic mushroom using cap in its name.
