BS Super Mario USA speech translation help
« on: November 09, 2011, 10:39:07 am »
As some of you might know, BS Super Mario USA was played in conjunction with a live broadcast that streamed arranged music and the voices of radio drama actors. Unfortunately, the only way to experience that today is through old VHS tapes of such broadcast.

I had a translator take a look at some of the game's speech and he translated most of it, but he couldn't understand some parts due to some characters talking too fast.

So, I'll post the video and his translation here in hopes other experienced translators can fill the missing parts and/or make corrections. Maybe someone like snark, which is a native Japanese speaker (I think?).

And thanks in advance.

50:11
Mario: *pant pant*
Luigi: Bro, we did it.
Peach: You two were awesome there!
Mario: Thanks, guy! But I couldn't have done it without your help.
King: Mario, Luigi, Toad and Princess Peach. As a reward, I have prepared a splendid game for all of you.
Commander: I hope you'll all have fun.

Announcer: Welcome to the King's Casino. Listen to the following instructions well in order to play the slot machine well and enhance your enjoyment. If the first symbol you'll get is a cherry, then you'll win two coins. If the second symbol is a cherry as well, that gets you four coins. If all three symbols are cherries, you will win you six coins. Three of any other kind is four coins, and a triple 7 is 20 coins. You can play the game until time runs out as long as you don't run out of coins. There are other winning combinations as well.

52:58
Mario: "Our job in this dreamworld is over. You have all done a good job. I'm grateful! Until next time, farewell."

53:15
Announcer: "As the power of the star was restored, Subcon slowly vanished into thin air. Nobody knew what became of the King and the Commander. Even people who suffered there like Super Catherine (Birdo), still enjoyed their time in that place. But it's alright. As long people remember the King and the Commander, they will come back someday. They will always welcome Mario and his friends. Catherine and her friends will be treated better next time. We promise."

Mario: "We guaranteed it."

55:10 (This part is incomplete, several voice actors are missing.)
"I am Tōru Furuya, voice actor for Super Mario. I hope you enjoyed the game. Go go Mario!"
"I am Ichirōta Miyakawa, voice actor for Luigi. Did any of you get a triple 7 on the slot? It's not easy, isn't it?"
"I am the King, Chikao Otsuka. I may be small, but I'm truly a King where it counts."

57:36 (This part is incomplete)
Announcer: ??

I just waltzed into this thread. O:

I've been trying to get some folks to translate the BS Super Mario USA video ups (I originally archived them off NicoNicoDouga) for quite a while. Is there anything you're willing to share?
As for those parts... hmm. I'll see if I can get someone I know on to them. Give me a bit.

BTW, have you been able to identify much of the audio tracks used in the Soundlink? They don't sound like licensed music, but they aren't normal Mario music either...

Well, I can share the ending, because that's all I have:
http://www.vgmuseum.com/end/bsx/a/bsmario.htm

To see the translated text, just hover over the images or change the .htm to .js

I had to ask in 5 or 6 forums for this because it's apparently really hard to understand due to the low quality of the videos. One person managed to translate most of it, but another guy had to get his Japanese girlfriend to listen to the audio and even she had trouble with it. Something about not being able to understand the way the drag queens talk (the birdos).

As for the music. I haven't paid much attention, but it's probably all taken from soundtracks, just like BS Zelda. The one during the intro definitely sounds like it was made for the game because it's too slow and mellow to be taken from a previously released soundtrack. But I could be wrong, of course. There are way too many Super Mario soundtracks and singles that it would be difficult to identify all the tracks.

By the way, great job on your superfamicom blog. I enter all the time to see what's new regarding BS-X development.

Interesting to find out the voice actress for Toad is named Nanae. IIRC, they named Toad's house after her in BS SMB3.

Neat to see there's a small translation. Here's something I'm curious about: Mario Wiki states that BS Super Mario USA is (story-wise) a sequel to the original game and is about Wart stealing the treasures of the Heroes of Subcon (hence why there are collectible Mario trophies). They also go on to claim that the ending has the King of Subcon banishing Wart to Koholint Island (an obvious tie-in to Link's Awakening). Now, considering Mario Wiki's reputation of being...laughable at times, I wonder if this is accurate at all or just some baseless fanfiction.

I don't know if it's a sequel (it can certainly be), but the ending bit is completely fake. Check the link I posted above, that's the entire ending. If you hover over the images, you can see the ending dialogue translated and it doesn't even mention Wart. Actually, you don't even have to play the game or fight Wart to get the ending, all you need to do is let the time run out.

Looks pretty obvious Satallaview wasn't advanced enough to be able to tell a player's position and thus had to be designed around broadcasting the streamed content at the same time for everyone.
(though it would seem from BS SMB3 it could at least allow players to submit their scores for some sort of contest purpose)

It's not even that (or just that), it's the fact that it was live. They couldn't be narrating the ending while you were still fighting Wart, so once the time was up, everyone saw the ending. Even if you do get to defeat Wart before the time is up, you would just get sent back to the level select screen.

All the soundlink games were like this, except the 3 BS Zeldas, because on those you would get a bad ending instead.

I'd love to see these broadcasts translated in full. Early example of a fully voice-acted Mario cast, with some quite odd humor.
