Is Argos no Senshi worth translating to English?
« on: October 10, 2011, 12:04:39 am »
Aside from having different music, what else has changed between the Famicom & NES port?

Is the English script a faithful translation from its Japanese counterpart?

Here's the text from the first Guru as an example:

Quote
◇ がうがんだ ◇ のやまには ◇ げるろぜお ◇ へのいりぐちがある。

Quote
IN THE "GRAN MOUNTAIN" LIES THE ENTRANCE TO "GARLOZ".
And I'll leave it at that!

The text is exactly the same, except for names. Probably best to post some other examples to be sure, though.

It says "In the Gauganda Mountain lies the entrance to Gerurouzeo". The names are probably some sort of proper name that I'm unaware of, so I just left them as they are (it's common in old Famicom games for them to use katakana-only or hiragana-only scripts. I assume this one is the latter).

Well, one thing I've heard that Tecmo botched is that Rygar is supposed to be the name of the final boss rather than the player (who supposedly was originally nameless), which is what got changed to Ligar in the English version.

Seeing as I'm going to play this game anyway, I might as well.  Who knows? Maybe someone might want to pick this up?

Next line:

FROM THIS POINT YOU CAN'T GO ON WITHOUT CROSSBOW

By the way, is there any mention in the actual game that your character is 'Rygar' ? I only remember that in the booklet.
And I'll leave it at that!

I think you need to check your script dumps. This appears to be one of those games that uses a "switch" control code to determine when to print katakana. I'm pretty sure Cartographer has the multiple table file functionality needed to dump it properly.

I'm not dumping scripts.

If there's a mistake, then it's in my typing.

There is no katakana:

It's been a while; I finally got the new test version of PocketNES working. ;D

Anyway, new line:

Quote
◇ げるろぜお ◇ へいったら ◇ にし ◇ きた ◇ のじゆんにすすめ。

WHEN YOU GET TO "GARLOZ", FIRST GO WEST, THEN GO NORTH.

I think you may have made a mistake in the transcription. じゆん isn't a word.

Then the line is "Once you've reached Gerurozeo, go west, then north."

If there's other things about the Japanese release (graphics, music, etc) that are different, you could always patch it.

Nothing else is different, as far as I know.

But then again, I haven't played enough of the game! :o

I'll find out.
And I'll leave it at that!
