Japanese OCR?
« on: April 21, 2011, 10:30:39 am »
I tried searching for this and couldn't find anything.

Are there tools on the web for doing OCR of Japanese characters?  I found http://maggie.ocrgrid.org/nhocr/ , but it's pretty terrible - the text I tried to use ended up full of numbers and Romanji.  I could do it character-by-character, I suppose, but that would be a bit slow.

I used a shareware program called KanjiOCR to process a few scanned lyrics sheets before.  I remember having to convert the scans into 1bpp bitmaps using GIMP before running them through the OCR, but the end results looked good to me (kana were correct, kanji at least looked correct).

I don't know of any free programs, but Adobe Acrobat Pro has built in Japanese OCR that works pretty well.
