Pokemon Gold/Silver Alpha Graphics Restoration
« on: April 03, 2011, 01:41:54 pm »
This restoration aims to restore the graphics from the prototype screen shots of Pokemon gold and silver, this would probably have been done by now, but apparently just touching the ROM causes the map connections, and certain NPC scripts to explode and require complete reworking.

 The beta screens.

The new graphics.

To-Do list
> get screen shots of new goldenrod graphics
> find graphical space to draw new ruins of alph
> fix all map connections
> fix NPC scripts
> If I can find the data, edit Kanto graphics to the American ones.
> add alpha title screen

If any one has had this problem with scripts and map connections before, the help would be appreciated. Comments?

Keep in mind, Pokemon Gold and Silver were intended to be on the Gameboy not the Gameboy color. And also notice the hair coming out of the cap of the main character in the prototype.

Thanks for pointing out the hair, I didn't notice that, and this is just an alpha graphics hack, not a color removal hack, I tried that before, and it didn't work out so well, I had to reset the palette for each tile by hand.

Or you could get gold tweak and disable the color and super gameboy feature

1st link.) This hack is just putting the alpha graphics back in, I'm making a separate hack for beta maps and the such.
2nd link.) Planning on that, but haven't started yet.
3rd link.) Already have that information
4th link.) I already had this magazine scan, and two of those alpha screen shots were from that scan...

And I haven't heard of gold tweak before, so I'll look it up and try it, just might work. And now, I've just inserted the American Kanto graphics into the game, and before you ask, I did it because every version of gold and silver used the Japanese Kanto graphics, and they really should have used the American red/blue graphics for the American versions of gold/silver.

EDIT: Gold tweak doesn't work on my netbook, so what offset is all of the palette data I need?,  are you really fine with GB palettes?, because this is what it would look like.

It could be that the early beta shots show the game being run on the normal gameboy rather then the gameboy colour. As both gold and silver plays perfectly nice on that system as well. I think you should leave the colours in or make it an option. :p

And here is the screen shot for Goldenrod city, I know the rooftops aren't the same as the ones in the screen shot, but all the roof data except for the first is corrupted, so I have to fix that, and then insert them.

That was a W.I.P shot mainly meant to show the off the new radio tower graphics, the roofs shouldn't even have had chimneys. All I need to do now is fix the roof graphics, and then goldenrod should be done.

You could change the rom header just like darkmew explained but I think myself that it would be better idea to keep the color support in the game.
Everyone who wanted could make VBA use only GB color support anyways...
Pokemon Dark Energy is a rom hack based on Pokemon Silver. Like most pokemon hacks, it retains the pokemon stylish gameplay but has plenty of elements from other RPGs as well. You'd better check it out!

I'm going to leave it in full color anyway, if people want black & white, they need to buy a ds.

So anyway, I'm thinking of upgrading to the tile-set expansion ROM, but I don't know how to access the extra graphical space, anyone know how to do that?

Just curious as to why people aren't very interested in this project, and to make this post not worthless, a screen shot of an updated building from ecruteak.

It now looks almost exactly like the one from the beta screen shots, I just need to mess around with the tile-set to fix any differences.

This might get more attention elsewhere.
I like it myself though :)

Just curious as to why people aren't very interested in this project,

I'm interested, but I try to limit myself to one Pokemon game a decade, and I've already started Black. >_>

I have been reading though.

Here's an update to that building from yesterday, I noticed I was using the wrong door, the doors I was using were used in a later build.

I'm glad people actually are interested, the reason I'm not updating that much is because I have to wait 7 days to post, unless someone comments on my previous one.

P.S Is anyone annoyed by the fact that some parts of the trees are brown?

Here are the new ruins of alph graphics.
Alpha screen

Recreation

I gave ilex forest the normal route tile-set. It fits the rest of the game better, and gives me just enough space to fit graphics for the ruins of alph.

I am also really interested in restoring alpha graphics into a remake of Gold that will include the new Safari Zone.  Can you please tell me how you edited the tilesets in the game to look like yours?  I especially love your Goldenrod Restoration.  If you used tutorials found online could you post the links for me?  I would greatly appreciate it.
