Super Mario RPG - The PAL edition
« on: February 14, 2011, 04:21:08 pm »
Super Mario RPG - Legend of the Seven Stars is one of the greatest games released for the Super Nintendo.
Sadly though it never got sold in Europe like Final Fantasy IV, VI and Chrono Trigger (All made by Squresoft)

If anybody's interested to see what the PAL version would've been like I've used the Lazy Shell editor and made a few changes, resulting in this hack.
Therefore I give you the Super Mario RPG - Legend of the Seven Stars - The PAL edition. :)

The following changes made:

-Toadstool renamed to Peach
-Bowser's Keep renamed Bowser's Castle
-Mushroom Kingdom renamed Toad Town
-Magikoopa renamed to Kamek
-Goby renamed to Cheep-Cheep
-The Big Boo renamed to Boo
-War Fan renamed to Folding Fan
-NokNok Shell renamed Koopa Shell
-Nautica Dress renamed Sailor Dress
-Dialogue changes but nothing really major
-Two new items created but can only be bought by Toad at the end of the game
-Command icons changed to match PAL SNES controller, same as well in the Bowyer boss fight

Trying to get it submitted now.

Are you sure that the magikoopa is in fact Kamek? Kamek is a name, magikoopa is a profession.

From what I heard the translators forgot to change his name to Kamek and when you Psychopath him near the end, he remembers Bowser, so that Magikoopa is Kamek.

Edit: I changed it back for my future 2.0 release, I think you're right on that one there.

I'm busy working on a 2.0 release for my hack, here's a list of what's changed.

Changed most of the monster names that make more sense round about 85% of them,
left most of the bosses names intact. (Example Mr. Kipper to Deep Cheep)

Changed most of the item names, around 70%. (Example, Super Slap to Smack Glove)

Changed most of the special attacks that actually make sense, 90% (Example, Drain Beam to Geyser)

Made the Factory area a bit more challenging.

But the biggest challenge is that I want to change the whole script and Mallow's Psychopaths. (De-Woolseyise)
I'm curious to know what it says from japanese to english, literally in a sense and then change it a bit so it can fit.
(There's hearts in Peach's dialogue at the start of the game.) But I can't find the script in japense anywhere on the internet.

If anybody can help me with the script it will be greatly appreciated

Looks like this topic summoned me. X D
More seriously, I have a script having the untranslated Japanese text from the game.
While not perfect, it'll get you more than half of the text. ^^
I typed it as I played the game. Just leave me an email adress to send it.
Or if it works, both SMRPG files should me in my Skydrive there :

Alternatively, you could always check a "Let's play" at nico nico douga there :

Mew seeker, I sent you a messege, forget it as I found a way to read the language, but the translations are... strange to me.

Here's a line I found from the very first sentence.
クッパに きをつけて マリオ!! translated into: Attaching coming to [kutsupa], [mario] from babel fish.

Would it actually translate into , Bowser's going to attack you, Mario!!?

I think it's something like "Good luck Mario against Bowser!"
"My watch says 30 chickens" Google, 2018

Wouldn't that be: Mario good luck against Bowser?

More like "Be careful/wary of Koopa, Mario!!" (literally, Kooppa)
And, hummm, Babelfish will mostly give weird translations when it comes to Japanese. ^^;;;
My guess is that in its structure, Japanese is much more different than at least most language.
Anyway, you'll need a human translator if you want a decent translation.
You'll probably have better result than Babelfish
even by yourself if you use something like JWPce on your own. X D

I'm having a go at translating it myself, but is there anybody I can ask to help me translate this?

If you can provide script dumps of the Japanese and English versions so I can compare them side-by-side, I'll see what I can do to help.

Note that Woolsey's writing is actually pretty awesome, so I recommend that if you change anything, only change what are indisputably mistakes (the whole Smithy/Exor confusion, Smithy's inexplicable second "NOOOOOOOO!" before the final battle, etc.). Also might want to provide the item/monster names, so I can vet those too.

EDIT:
More like "Be careful/wary of Koopa, Mario!!" (literally, Kooppa)

Literally, Gukbap. He's named for a Korean dish. So yeah, you wanna watch out when you start bandying terms like "accuracy" around with Mario games. What SMRPG really needs is consistency.

Thank you for the interest, I like Woolsey's writing too (Son of a Submariner my favourite line) but I'm just curious to see
what the literal translation is like. I'm just surprised nobody else has done this.

I've already done the the rest (items/monsters/attacks etc) like I said for my 2.0 release. It's just the actual script and psychopaths I need.
I'm not sure if this is what you're after but I've got the table files here, I followed a guide on gamefaq on how to dump them.

[MOD Edit: ROM links removed. I'm hoping this was a mistake, so please make sure the correct file is uploaded next time. Thanks.]

I'm still relatively new to this though...

Those aren't table files. I'm pretty sure those are the actual ROMs with the wrong file extension attached.

I need the script dumps, as in the actual game text exported to a file. Have you ever used romjuice? Cartographer? Just how are you making these changes if you don't know what a table file or a script dump is?

I hold my hands up, what I did was wrong :-[.

I'm still new to this whole thing, but the problem is trying to use Cartographer.

I can't get it to open let alone work. I used a hexeditor before but I guess that was the wrong thing to use.

What I'm using is HexposureWin a windows port of the DOS version, I used it once to change the ending text of Rockman (Megaman).

So what I've done is dumped both versions in their entirety as this is all I can do with the little knowledge I have.

Here's the link, don't know if this is what you need but this is all I can do:

Cartographer is a command-line application. That's why it doesn't "open"; double-clicking it is the same as running it from the command line without any arguments.

Here's a useful trick. Copy this text into Notepad:

Quote
@cmd

Save it as a batch file (.bat) in your working directory. This will function as a Command Prompt shortcut, and better still, it'll always start in your current directory.

Do you even bother to check these files before you send them, BTW? Now you've given me the contents of the entire ROM uncompressed into a text file. The English table file seems legit, but the Japanese table file is identical - do they really use the same one? I doubt it, since I don't see any Japanese characters represented in either, but...
