Henke37's Ace Attorney fangame engine
« on: January 16, 2011, 10:42:16 am »
I am making a game engine for Ace Attorney fan games. I am using Flash for it.

I have gotten quite far in the project. I have enough to make a working case. It is mostly a matter of refining the GUI and importing character animations right now. You can check out my WIP here.

However, I do have some issues with it. While a lot of the graphics have been ripped from the game roms, noone has published any tools for the job. And in fact, some details remains unripped. I would appreciate any related help there.

Interesting. A friend of mine has been working on the same thing, in Game Maker:

Yeah, that's where I am getting my resources atm. But their quality isn't the best to be honest.

Check in google for translation or dead translation project.
I remember reading something about the tools to decompress/decrypt the text, will produces some graphics too.
Or try to rip something from the "anthology" Gyakuten Saiban Jiten but be readly but play puzzles :p

Anyway the ds has a resolition of 256 x 192 pixels and even if u take a "low" resolution of 1024 x 768 of a pc screen (1/4 to have one ds screen like in your example) u get 512 x 384 that is still 200% of a real ds resolution.
If u not find/get some hi-rez pics from Capcom, u wil not get any better from ripping the NDS game.

Yes, I know that I am not going to get any high resolution pictures. The issue is not the resolution, but the quality of the existing rips. I fear that they may be badly done. And recently I have also started fearing that certain pictures are internally stored as multiple pieces for easier animation. I'd really love to have direct access to such data.

I don't know if these would be any better than Court Records in terms of quality, but there's two Ace Attorney sprite rip categories listed on The Spriter's Resource:

It looks like it lacks several games and it seems to have a nasty habit of duplicating frames. But thanks, I guess it's never worse to have more sources.

i just remembered something...actually it was some day ago  but i did lost this tread.
Anyway...what about ripping the Wiiware version?? Or even better the pc version??
Unlucky for u the pc version is slied to pieces and missing some parts too:
http://www.siliconera.com/2008/03/11/phoenix-wright-trilogy-diced-into-bite-size-pc-morsels/

If my japanese isn't so bad, u can download all 3 first episode for pc version from:
http://www.daletto.com/pc/gs/gs_3.html

and some updates from:
http://www.sourcenext.info/download/gyakuten.html
http://www.sourcenext.info/download/gyakuten2.html
http://www.sourcenext.info/download/gyakuten3.html

Bonus for u maybe. There is a limited and an extended NDS version coming to the japanese shops this month with a cd/dvd...maybe something usefull for u :P
http://www.capcom.co.jp/gyakutenkenji/2/goods.html#col
Ask somebody with better japanese as my for the contenent.

And last but not least...there are the flash trials on the Capcom site with some Wallpaper too here:
http://www.capcom.co.jp/gyakutenkenji/2/other.html#web

I hope something usefull in all those things

Back again  >:D

I just saw your help request and i have a bad news for u ... there are no video in the ace attorney just bit and pieces.
I make u an example of the beginning of the first game where the guy killed the Cindy Stone with the "The thinker".

The game will call a black screen with only the head of the "the thinker" on the top edge of the screen.
Activate the animation of the blood dropping
wait
slowly scroll the the screen down (bg and animation)
wait again
stop dripping
chage bg to Cyndy on the floor
start the animation of the red blood near her head (only the red part)
...

if u send me your email in PM, i will send u a modified version of the game to view the animations on black or white background (like the blood but without thinker or cindy)...maybe u can do something with it.
Some are looped, some play just one time and others are frame by frame type.
Not there yet but in a future when i will have a complete list of the backgrounds and animations, i can make u a perfect version for your needs (blood with the right background).

I would rather have an offline tool that doesn't involve an emulator.

And you are wrong yet correct about the no video statement. Only the fourth game has real video. Well, the 1-5 case did have one too I believe.

As for the link, you clearly did not do a lot of investigation. I am a very active member at that site already.

My rom offer is offline. It a modified rom of the game that play one after the other the animations. Or u can tell me what one u need to redump. But yes, u will need an emulator or a flashcard anyway.

The video thing is possible because i am more focused on the first 3 games at the moment.

I actually did no research at all in that site, i just steped on it searching for something i had lost and u came to my mind

I understood what you mean. But what I meant with offline is a tool that runs independently of the game. I want to open the game files and rip the raw graphics. Only that way do I feel that the data will be perfectly represented.
