My roommate's iPhone project
« on: January 27, 2011, 03:47:26 pm »
My room mate is developing an iPhone game. Since he doesn't have a ton of cash, I told him I'd ask on here for any help I could get. He's really excited about the project and it's almost complete.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!  :thumbsup: :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

The languages he is looking for are Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Korean (maybe Russian)

Only translate the stuff in quotes below! The rest is the context to help with the translation...

Quote
---TITLE SCREEN------
 "The Last Ace of Space"
        This is the English title of the game. Ace is the main character of the game- a cat in a spacesuit, armed with a raygun. The title does not have to be literally translated- that is, you can localize it- name it whatever you want, so long as A)it's catchy sounding in the translated language, and B)it somewhat touches on the theme of the game (read the description above for that info)
"Start"
        This is the button you press to start the game
"Options"
        This button opens the options menu
"Social"
        This button opens Open Feint (or Game Center, depending on what you logged in as)

---OPTIONS MENU---
"Back"
       This is the back button to return to the main menu
"Sound FX"
        This is a switch to turn off/on the sound fx
"Tutorial"
        This is a switch to turn off/on the tutorial
"Music"
        This is a switch to turn off/on the music
"Credits"
        This button lets you view the credits
"On/  Off"
        The text on the switches
"GO!"
      The text on the button to view the credits

---CREDITS SCREEN---
"MEET THE TEAM!"
      Header before listing names of staff members
"Art and Designery" (should be 'Design', but we're being playful here- feel free to make it sound humorous or cute-sounding in the translation)
"Code and Soundsmithing" (should be 'Sound Design'. same notes as the above.)
"Made with..." (could also be interpreted as "Made using...")
    Words before the logo of engine used to make game

---IN GAME TEXT---
"Jump!"
    Text on a button that you press to jump
"Slide!"
    Text on a button that you press to slide
"Tap!"
     Text on object you tap
"Flick!"
    Text on object you flick (more like, 'slide your finger across,' but we like saying 'flick')

---PAUSE MENU--
"Paused"
  Header at the top of the pause menu
"Resume"
  Click this to un-pause the game and resume gameplay
"Quit"
    Click this to quit the game and return to the main menu

---TUTORIAL---
NOTE: The language in the tutorial is very stylized, meant to have a playful nature. Please try and preserve that feel in the translation.

"This is Ace! It's your job to keep him from being dead!"
"Tap either button to jump! (hold longer to jump higher)"
"Great!" (text that is displayed each time the player correctly does something in the tutorial)
"Here comes Flubby.... he's really fat... (slide your finger on the slide bar to dodge fatness)"
"These are Copterpops... (When Ace draws his gun, tap them to make 'em dead!)"
"Here is Flicky....  (Flick him to short out his rocket pack)"
"Meet Chunkers... He gets airsick... (Tap him to pop his balloon)"
"This is the Monstrometer  (This shows you how far away you are from "The Slime Monster".)"
"When Ace takes too much damage, "The Slime Monster" shows up"
"When you see these shoes, tap them quickly to make Ace run faster... or he gets digested"
"These are space beans (collect 3 to make rocket pig extra gassy...)"
"That's all he can take. Click on him to give yourself a gas-powered boost!" ("He" refers to Rocket Pig)
"Awesome! Now you're ready! (You can always turn on the tutorial again in the options menu)"

DaMarsMan, can your roommate release a beta pic or two? I figure a sense of what it's going to look like will help inspire translators to take this one on. Also, any word on compensation for the translators beyond a credits listing? I think you subtly covered that in your post, but just wanted to make sure.

In any case, the notation is very helpful; I'm just wondering if there's any space restrictions in the tutorial messages especially. Do the translators need to fit these messages into little speech bubbles of a defined size, or does your roommate have some wiggle room there?

EDIT: Whoops, since BRPXQZME answered, in an earlier version of this post I asked if anyone else is getting a reaaalllly long-stretching browser window in this thread. Maybe it's just IE8's turn to bug out on me again.

Only when I preview the post ;D

Code: [Select]
td.windowbg > table, td.windowbg2 > table {
table-layout:fixed;
overflow: hidden;
}
div.main > br + table.tborder {
table-layout:fixed;
}

(hope I didn’t get any hopes up just by posting; I sound kind of retarded in Japanese, so I don’t really do E–J translation)

EDIT: oh snap I got ninja edited
we are in a horrible and deadly danger

I think he'd be willing to do $20 bucks per translation to a paypal. I know it's not a lot but he can't afford more and I don't think it should take longer than 30 minutes for a skilled translator. You can see some art at Astro Crow Games. The game is almost done.

Also note, that I am involved in the company but this is completely his project. I won't be receiving ANY compensation for this because it's his project. As for the stretching window, I have no idea what's going on.

Frick, it looked small enough that I could translate to Spanish while in class, but now it just made me realise that not only is there a lot more to translate, but also that my Spanish isn't as great as it should be... ;_; I'll give it a go some other time when I'm free.
Who will quote me next?

I'll do the french translation if it can help you (I'm french), it'll be ready for tomorrow (I have a few things to ask in pm, some things about the game to be sure about the translation of a few terms).

Edit : French translation done (I thought it could be a good idea to edit my message, to not have someone else doing it for nothing).
