Translations: Old School Ero-Gaming - Ace of Spades
« on: December 22, 2009, 04:33:17 am »

Update By: golden

Ace of Spades for the PC is now completely translated into English. It's a popular strip Poker/Blackjack Ero-Game published in 1996 which features some really nice artwork characteristic of its time. Also, filler did a great job with the translation.

Story-wise, it's certainly not the best among its peers but it's a fun game and will definitely entertain you. Check the README for other details and enjoy!

NOTE: This game is not meant to be played by minors due to its adult content.

I can not possibly approve more of this translation and the genre in which it occurs.

I approve as well, and am excited to see mention of a Viper translation on the webpage.

Wow, check out those awesome 256 color screenshots.

Nobody does that kind of artwork anymore.

Nice work.

Takes me back to my Windows 3x days. Now that is when PC games really were epic. Somehow makes me think of Growlanser as well...

With the extensive use of dithering, those screenshots look like they are using 16 colors, not 256.  Which if true would only be even more impressive.  I've seen games on the PC98 use 16 colors with such brilliant dithering you could easily think they were 256 color or higher.  Too bad 99% of those PC98 games are still in Japanese only.

probably the dodgy, seemingly a rip version of the game i scrounged up, but the text all has boxes everytime there is a space for me.  Font issue maybe?  dunno.  I'm using XP by the way.  Just curious if anyone else is getting that, I do assume it's the poor copy I am using.

I have a fix for you Cryomancer. If you have Japanese set as your "non unicode language" in XP, switch it back to English and you'll be all set.

BTW: It's nice to see the positive reception and the nostalgia being conjured up by this time-worn title. :)

I sent Cryomancer a PM but I guess he probably missed it so I'm posting it here just in case:

If for some strange reason, the installer isn't copying the custom font required by the translation to your "c:\windows\fonts", then that issue would happen as well. Could you check for a font named "ace_font.ttf" in that folder? If it isn't there, you can grab it here: http://www.fileden.com/files/2009/12/21/2697131/ace_font.ttf

Let us know if you managed to solve the problem.

I did indeed miss the PM, sorry about that.

Oddly enough, the suggested fixed didn't seem to do much.  I checked my non-unicode application settings, and they were indeed set to English.  I tried running the game in applocale in both English and Japanese settings with no difference.  I tried both with and without the font, and the text did change, but the boxes remain.  I'll give it a try on a couple other computers and see if they have the same behavior, if so I'm willing to assume it's just a poor copy of the game to begin with.  It did install the font though, but I uninstalled, tried playing, then reinstalled it and tried again.  Weird stuff.

edit: hah, works fine on my girlfriends computer, so something is messed up on my end apparently.
