Gaming Discussion / Re: The hardest game you ever played.
« on: March 19, 2017, 11:46:20 pm »
My Hero for the Sega Master System.

Sweet tap-dancing Christ on a crumpet that game kicks my ass every time. Though it's one of those games that I personally find to be difficult, yet some of my friends didn't seem to have much trouble getting much further in the game than I ever could.

Holy shit, I totally forgot about Rikaichan. That little screenshot brings back memories of being a university student pouring over texts and translation assignments due the next day.

Gaming Discussion / Re: Does retron 5 have a purpose?
« on: March 18, 2016, 12:01:26 am »
The only reason I can think of would be someone wanting a dedicated emulation device hooked up to one of their TVs. I had been looking at a few online for a wee while, but I think it might actually be cheaper to get a Raspberry Pi, put in a case and use it to emulate everything.

Which would leave my physical game collection gathering dust in my closet.

Fist of the North Star for the NES. Jesus tap-dancing Christ on a crumpet that game is awful.

I seem to kick the most ass with Chun Li

Looks like I'm finally going to have to get myself a steam account.

Gaming Discussion / Re: They see me remakin', they hatin'
« on: June 18, 2015, 03:33:49 am »
I wonder just what kind of remake it will be.

If it's just a straight remake or an expansion on the first game, I may not even bother. I would rather see continuation of the story, especially after Advent Children.

Plus I don't own a PS4, so there is that.

I just watched a speed run of Cadash and it looks FUCKING AWESOMME

It looks really hard though...Idk if I could be very effective at it.

Cadash isn't as hard as it probably looks. One of my favourites also.

Gaming Discussion / Re: Your Favorite DooM Mods/Levels?
« on: June 15, 2015, 12:57:46 am »
And here I was thinking I was finally going to be able to put my DooM addiction to rest.

Also let he hear your favourite heretic/hexen mods

metal slug, no contest at all on that one

Metal Slug for the win.

I also love me some King of Fighters.

Gaming Discussion / Re: Expound on your favorite 8 NES games. ;D

I never had a NES as a kid and never played much NES when I got into emulation, but I have decided I am going to try every single game mentioned in this thread. Lay it on me.

シンジばかりええ思いしやがって! 畜生!

"God damn it! That Shinji gets to have all the fun!" or "That damn Shinji better get to back to work!" (depending on context)

I think the confusion here is over the meaning of いい思いをする. It means to have a good time and it's normally used negatively when someone - normally part of a group - is either having more than their fair share of fun, or not doing their fair share of work, without any real consequences. It's used a lot when someone slacks off during group work and then still gets the same rewards as the rest of the group who not only did their own share of the work, but covered the slackers share as well.

Gaming Discussion / Re: What did you play in school?
« on: March 05, 2015, 08:01:39 pm »
Granny's Garden anyone. That witch still haunts my dreams.  :-\

I also remember a game called (I think) 'number munchers' where you played a little monster that had to eat certain numbers, like prime numbers or multiples of four of whatever.

Gaming Discussion / Re: Store selling romhacked carts
« on: February 09, 2015, 12:17:28 am »
I wouldn't have a problem with it if they were selling them for cheap - cost of the cart and a wee but on the top to make it worth while. $60 per cart is clearly just a money grab.

Gaming Discussion / Re: Suikoden 2 on PSN
« on: December 18, 2014, 02:18:59 am »
I'm assuming the Japanese version is a LOT less valuable?
(like a lot of Japanese version JRPGs)

Suikoden was a hit here in Japan, so not only did they produce a great number of copies, they also re-released them as 'hit' games, basically the same as when a PSX game would go 'platinum' in the west and it would be re-released for cheap. People still love the game, it's just that there are more than enough copies to go around.

But yeah, price wise it's not nearly worth as much as the U.S or Euro versions.

I picked up a complete copy in a second hand book store for 100 yen.

Scarcity is everything, I guess.

Well, I don't know what you want me to say. Your translation is all across the board, going from "the gist of what they're saying" to "way off the mark" at times. If you want to do a localization to change what it says for a western audience, then you're welcome to do that. But I don't really understand what the point of asking for feedback is.

I think what he wanted was for someone to correct his translations.

Well I'm already half way through a family-sized cask of sake, so let me take a look.

Time to get myself a nice big snow sculpture
(A ゆきまつりのぞう is an a large sculpture made from snow, typically made for a winter festival)

What are you going to do with that?/What do you need that for?

It's no good to you!/It's of no use to you!
(Or more literally : it won't won't serve any purpose)

None of your business!
Eat this!
Now this world...
will be winter FOREVER!

Stage 1
Old man:
It's terrible!

We need the statue (or sculpture) for the Winter Carnival (festival).

If we can't have the winter festival...

No festival...
What will happen?

Old man:
Spring won't come

Got it!
I won't stop until the statue is returned!

-if choosing Kiyu-

Hyou - old guy says
Lord help us.
Kiyu, you go as well

Kiyu - old guy says
Lord help us.
Kiyu, get going.

-if Hyou chosen, Kiyu says
if using Kiyu she says

2P mode last part of cutscene

Old guy:
Lord help us.

Old guy:
What are you doing?
You're going too!
(literally : What are you doing? You're not going? - but said in such a way that it becomes an imperative)

...or something like that. Check the English against the cut-scene and edit it to match what's happening.

Gaming Discussion / Re: Old games you wish would get updated re-releases

The entire Wonder Boy and Monster World franchises could do with a re-boot. Too bad the parent company went tits-up.

Gaming Discussion / Re: Grandia: What did you like so much about it?
« on: November 24, 2014, 08:02:18 pm »
It's paced really well. The transition from a boy outside playing, pretending to have adventures, to a young man facing off against evil happens so gradually.  Other than that it was a little paint-by-numbers in terms of story and gameplay, but it was still the good kind of paint-by-numbers. It's not my most favourite game, but there is a special place in my heart for Grandia.

I think what confuses me more is all the hate that Grandia II gets.

Gaming Discussion / Re: Monsters carrying potions, etc. - Explanation?
« on: November 22, 2014, 04:14:22 am »
There is no real explanation, it's been the source of video-game jokes for a long time.

There was one game though, a PC RPG, that played on the concept quite well. For instance, if you killed a wolf, you got a basket and a red dress as a pick up, implying that the wolf ate little red riding hood. I can't for life of me remember the name of the game though.
