Much appreciated. I'm using Lunar IPS, and have tried patching the ROM listed on its page (confirmed CRC32) and the closest equivalent in the set that I already had (GoodNES …W (!)…). Am testing on Mesen but recall having the same results on FCEUX before. As soon as gameplay starts, the sprites disappear and the game freezes.

Is there anything different in my process from yours, so I can see where my problem is?

Am trying to get this hack to run: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3708/

When I patch it, the game freezes after pressing start. IIRC, the original rom it was made from was a version of smb1 that had no title at the topic. But I might be mistaken.

Anyone had better luck with it?

Have you put Roll into Magical Doropie yet? It had some pretty nice cutscenes that would be primte for customizing.

Afterward, Whomp'Em and Bucky O'Hare seem ready to be Rollified.

The Curse of Issyos. It isn't exceptionally hard, I just can't quite get past a certain point. Love the game though (and will beat it one day when I actually have time to play it more).

Why release a buggy version as soon as you can, knowing tons of copies of the buggy version will be in circulation while only the small percentage that bothers to update periodically have anything close to a functional version?

...who do you think he is, a modern, major AAA blockbuster publisher?

Having worked my way through university in a game retailer, I would say very confidently that "improved graphics" and the like would actually dissuade more casual customers than it would attract.

The main issue is that every 30 pages or so, people get the misconception that this thread is a hack request thread, not an idea dumping ground. The latter has its benefits. It's fun to peruse, occasionally discuss the hypothetical situations of a goal could be achieved, etc. Once in a blue moon, someone will take an idea from the thread and run with it.

The problem with the former is that it encourages people to make requests, which is clearly against the Rules of Thumbs section of the forum rules:

It is never a good idea to request someone else do work for you. That includes asking for someone to make a utility, do a translation, write a document etc.

This becomes particularly annoying when it leaves posters entitled enough to repost asking why no one's fulfilled their "request."

That would make the game decent enough for my eyes to be considered a serious Metroid Prime spin off and some some childish crap with that lame design for the characters.

Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.

There's also an irony in someone complaining about media being made for children as being childish.

It's not the marketing, as in advertising, that bothers me so much, as that's easily avoidable. It's the transparent targeting of demographics  evident in things like artistic direction and content that does.

Games that are as blatantly targeted toward adolescent males as the "Graphic Tees" section of a department store immediately lose my interest. Basically everything DC has put out in terms of comics, games, animation, and film in the last few years  is a prime example.

I lost interest in majorly published games years ag (I have a hard time separating a product from its marketing) and generally just follow indie, small team or solo projects, especially game jams and the like. I'm always curious in what the indie scene in any non-English speaking community is like. Would love to stumble across a Japanese equivalent to TIG source, etc.

Looks better. Generally, I go with 6px tall if single spacing, 7 if double spacing (to still allow a pixel for a comma to drop down.) If including lowercase, usually 6px tall with two pixel tails and double spacing.

Anyway, don't forget to alter the punctuation too. Now, your exclamation point is dropping below the baseline. You might want to get trim the stray pixel off the S as well. That's the most problematic letter at 6px high, I believe.

As for font advice, if you plan to have horizontal rows of characters immediately adjacent to each other (single spaced instead of double spaced) it might improve readability to reduce character height to 6 pixels instead of 7. Right now, the text on those two screens looks very dense. Otherwise, looking great as always.

That answers a lot. It looks it uses a completely custom palette, heavily different from any standard palette.

Kind of a strange request, but I'll make it anyway:

Does anyone know of an NES game that loads nearly a whole nametable and attribute table, completely uncompressed, as its title screen?

I'm looking to test some NES screens, and I'd like to have a ROM that I can quickly paste a name table and attribute table into and change the palette easily for testing.
