Oh I think I misunderstood what your software does, it hard codes the game genie code into the rom?  I use real hardware too I don't like romhacks that don't run on real hardware.  This is definitely a time saver I've hex edited game genie codes into games before and it took a little effort.

ROM Hacking Discussion / Castlevania 3j Alucard Romhack
« on: January 25, 2014, 10:03:00 am »

This is a modified version of the Japanese release of castlevania 3.  For the sypha route I changed what music track plays on what stage.  I weakened some of the later boss attacks.  I made the main character Alucard, starting with the level 3 attack and the sypha freeze attack.  If you die you don't lose your freeze attack or weapon strength.  If you walk through a door and you picked up the time weapon you revert back to your freeze attack.  You can still pick up side characters including Alucard.  You start with 5 extra lives.  The ending will always be the Alucard ending.  I got tired of the belmonts always getting the spotlight, Alucard is a much more fun character to use anyway.

I would have posted this in my mini-hacks thread but this is a bit too big to be considered a mini-hack, it uses changes I made in my mini-hacks.

It should be noted I've only tested the sypha and most of the alucard route (alucard route was mostly to see if it would crash).  Please let me know of any bugs / issues in other routes.  I'm aware the graphics go nutbar for a few seconds when you pick up alucard as a side character, I find this amusing.  I have tested this hack on real hardware (a vrc6 devcart) so it gets my seal of quality.

Really cool.  I noticed a bunch of emulators automatically save codes for games and auto-load them when I load the rom so I don't have to re-enter them every time.  Sometimes I use a game genie code to test something and then I forget to disable it when I reload the rom and wonder why my hex changes don't work.

ROM Hacking Discussion / Re: Rockman 4 MI menu freeze?

I'm pretty certain that as soon as you fight him it auto saves that you attempted him and "hitting reset" he won't appear again meaning you'll have to start all over.  I may be "good enough" to get him but that doesn't mean I should enjoy how he set it up.

I'm fine with agreeing to disagree on this as we tend to do with stuff.

The optional secret boss lacks a weakness on purpose. By design that means every weapon deals 1 damage, and getting hit by the Kunai depletes your ammo reserves too. You're suppose to deplete your reserves of everything - almost all your weapons, almost all your E-Cans. The fight is suppose to test you to the limits. The most effective weapons against him are the Water Jet, Toad and Ring Boomerangs, and the boss battle is designed to make you go through all of them and then have to use other weapons too like Sparkman Bow or even the Hell Wheel.

Upon defeat he drops a Yashichi - which just like in the first game restores all weapon and health energy, and the secret power up which makes the remainder of the game a breeze.

This boss is intended only for the hardest of the hardcore.

Drakon's changes to make him always appear and be weaker are thus missing the point from the design standpoint.

But again I'm not trying to suggest there is anything wrong with his hack, just that it should be noted that it's unofficial.

Well I appreciate you going from saying "there's no reason at all for Drakon's hack" to "I'm not trying to suggest there is anything wrong with his hack".  The second quote is a much nicer way of putting it.  Of course my hack is against the design standpoint, because I think the original design concept is silly and needed changing which is why I made these changes.  Is that not the point of romhacking, or making changes in general?  To me cutting out part of the experience for everyone but "the most hardcore players" is a bad design decision.  Hardcore players should get a better score, not a cool boss that casual players don't even get to play.  Making a boss that's a royal pain to even get a chance to play and then even more of a pain to kill is another bad decision.  You only get one shot at fighting him and he has a one hit kill attack that he performs many times during the fight.

What attracted me to minus infinity in the first place was the balanced difficulty.  This new release includes harder modes which is great for people who like that sort of thing. The authors should make the game give you a higher score for playing on these modes as a reward.  I think history has shown that gamers aren't full of fond memories of "this or that true last boss".  It's been demonstrated that elitist catering doesn't make for popular games.  Minus infinity is a great game that needs more of the greatness that people grew to love in the first release and less of the kaizo mario true last boss mentality.

It might be for the most hardcore players, but I think making you play through THE ENTIRE GAME on one life just to get ONE CHANCE to fight the boss carries an excessive punishment for failure (repeating the FULL GAME after EVERY MISTAKE is not something I consider fun or fair design).

Exactly how I felt.  Then I discovered that fighting him was grossly unfair so I made some of his attacks weaker.  You know how normally in the game when you get hit for a second or so you flash and can't get immediately hit again?  Well I discovered when his health starts to get low his throwing star attacks don't have this temporary hit recovery time so if you're in the direct path of the throwing star it take away close to half your health in one hit.  I haven't figured out how to restore the temporary invincibility at this point.  Instead I just made your weapons a little stronger.

The ultra weapon he drops does make the last bit of the game easier, but it's such a short part of the game anyway.  I don't care so much about getting that "secret upgrade" it's more about having the enjoyment of fighting him in a more balanced fight which is what my changes turned it into.  I didn't remove the item drop I left it in so people can chose to either grab it or simply avoid picking it up by jumping over it.  Not like the game is very fun playing with a constant critical hit upgrade anyway.

Uhm, the only thing I "hacked to be easier" is the true last boss.  I made it so you get him regardless of clearing the game in one life.  I made some of his attacks do less damage.  I made him a little weaker against weapons.

skip to around 1:32:00 to see it in action.  Since recording this video I made weapons do a little more damage against him since I still felt he was too difficult when I recorded this.  I never asked for the approval of the staff or inclusion into this project.

Thanks for the heads up that the 0.02 was just released.  Aside from the 'configuration' menu, is there anything else different?  I couldn't tell from the readme

There's a "true last boss" that you get if you make it to the third chimera boss without dieing.  I romhacked the game to give you the true last boss regardless if you die / continue or not.  The third chimera boss isn't nearly as interesting and I doubt I'd ever clear the entire thing without dieing somewhere.

Just downloaded this, talk about amazing!  The only way this could be more perfect is having a new music score.

I'm no masochist. lol.
The ROM hack work on the left side was done on the MM5 rom. I am, though, quite proud of the highjacking I did to the text display routine to have it print the name of the Robot Master at the bottom of the screen instead of them being listed under each portrait.

Here is the patch and a short vid of it in action:

That is a really impressive hijack.  Unfortunately unless there's a chunk of free space somewhere most rom hacking involves hijacking / rewriting a function into something else.  For my gimmick! hack I rewrote the point based oneup function to display health instead.

I just tried this on a freshly burned MI 0.02 rom and it worked.  Thanks a lot for letting us know.

Whoa I completely missed this.  What a brilliant idea there's so many great nes games with pretty bad graphics.

Cripes Vanya that's some insane work.  You did that to megaman 1?!  That must have been a huge amount of changes to the programming on top of graphics.

What's the purpose in changing the audio tracks?

Also, do you have any other mini-hacks in the works?

A lot of games with great tracks don't use them enough and have some bad tracks I'd rather replace with good ones.  I'm currently uploading a playthrough video of my castlevania 3 j romhack that changes the tracks around and starts you off with 5 extra lives instead of 2.  For me great / bad music can really make / ruin a gaming experience.

The purpose of these mini hacks is to make changes to classic games that I feel makes them better, which may not necessarily be popular choices for things to change.  Taking the time to figure out how to make these changes is a fun way to help me improve at romhacking.  I get to experience great games in a way I more prefer and I get better at romhacking while doing it.

Wait...nobody has re-inserted the yume kojou sprites into mario 2 yet?  I sorta assumed someone would have done that by now.  I'd like to see a nes / famicom romhack like that.

What music did you change around specifically?

Just changed which song is played at what point.  See the above playthrough videos in the first post.

For kicks I cranked the walking speed in belmont's revenge up as high as I think it goes, it wasn't that fast, maybe I need to adjust something else.

This is awesome.  I wish I had the skill to write something to handle various rom compressions.
