Legend of Mana: I've played this one for a few hours and intent to pick it back up some time in the near future. It again feels like another step up from my perspective. The graphics are beautiful, the controls are fine, the music is nice. The overworld or whatever you want to call it in this game is pretty interesting. It's strange, but I like it. It really sets it apart from a lot of other games I've played. For those who don't know, you more or less arrange the overworld in this game yourself. Certain items can be turned into new areas that can be placed on the world map and can then be explored like normal. Being given the choice between a male or female protagonist was nice too. Can't wait to get back to this one.

I also played a bit of Sword of Mana, but like FFA I've only played enough of it to get a feel for it.

legend of mana is soooo good. the beat'em'up battle system leaves a bit to be desired but it's like a disney storybook.

-Regarding The Series Entirely-

good post. "escapist literature" love that.

FF and TES are my life. everyone has their thing, star wars, tolkien, D&D whathaveyou. FF and TES are my nerdist escape lore that I know everything about and have been playing since i was a child.

Well, y'know, if you don't have something to compare it to (like the "Stealth" GBA port), it looks like a perfectly reasonable game.

nooooooo someone blatantly just didn't give a shit i mean the hud looks pasted on, graphical glitches, a game that's supposed to be "fast" is bogged down and so slow. like they wanted a point of reference? sonic advance runs at a normal framerate, so whoever did this KNEW it was possible just didn't care.

And we all know about Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis for GBA:

Telling the plain truth, I do not like to play games with different music than I first played them with. I don't like the GBA FF games for this reason, and I have a replacement audio on my Steam copy of FF4.

I also have a custom FF8 Roses + Wine mod for the original PSX music. :)

i played FF8 PC replaced with XIIIs soundtrack. It surprisingly fit perfectly, though i guess thats because both games share a modern aesthetic.

Weirdest bit of nonsense, yes. The weirdest experience for me was hearing job reports.

"I got a good feeling!!" "This is the way!"

"life is short....bury, steady sword"  the ability has nothing to do with any of this nonsense

heard this gem

"So, YOU'RE the one they sent, let me guess, think you can win huh? Don't tell me you believe that? ahahahahaha"

every anime/jrpg ever. really sets the mood of danger let me tell you....

Yeah, I think a lot of "dumb" terminology mentioned in this thread are actually pretty good---just because you aren't familiar with latin or other foreign language/religious concepts doesn't make their usage dumb.  I do, however, have a feeling that there is a direct correlation between how "dumb" a poster thinks a term is and how much they don't like said game it shows up in...

Which is probably why I haven't seen a mention of the Persona series generally (and SMT generally), which uses a number of Indian/Hindu terms and themes in almost all its games.  All of which might be considered "dumb" in English.

English translation of things japanese is usually "dumb" in my opinion. So many games and anime (dont watch it but i've seen) just say things no natural english speaker would.

"so its YOU"  no english speaker has ever used this as a greeting. FUCKING EVER,
"DON'T TELL ME..." god stop this one please

just mundane things that could greatly use a rephrase that any english speaker should feel awkward about saying.

XIII, you can take or leave the story line, but the battle system is so fantastic. In the early stages of the game, it's kinda simple, you don't even need to switch Paradigms really but at a point, the game utterly drops your hand and becomes ruthless and says "i hope you've been practicing, paying attention to this battle system because from here on out, battles will be unforgiving". With crystal points being so expensive, grinding really isn't practical so to progress you have to plan things out and know what works, who does what ect.

No other FF has a battle system so challenging I think. Later on, auto-battle becomes a toss up because you'll start to think of better ways to take down foes for instance, auto-battle will prefer to use veil and and shell before bravery and faith when you really need the latter, but this isn't until at LEAST hour 15.

I really like XIII but with combat being 90% of the game, the fact that the system doesn't even open up and challenge you until halfway thru is a bit much. You get a Sentinel tutorial within 2 hours of gameplay bout you never NEED that role again until 15 hours later on Gran Pulse, but once you hit that threshold it's awesome. I love it.

in old school Doom i can survive and beat levels on Hurt Me Plenty (normal) I could prolly do Ultraviolence, but pain in the ass. Nightmare is just for speed runs, there's no fun in that otherwise.
