Personally, I'm absolutely in favour of some familiarization when necessary, even if the days when you couldn't look up Japanese concepts (which often do not have equivalents in the western world) are long gone, and it doesn't matter as much. Also, I'd say that just doing the old "according to keikaku" shtick is as silly as just throwing the original script out the window. The best way is to somehow balance things out and provide an experience that is both close to the original version, but also has its own identity, in a way. To be fair, it's not so easy with most 8-bit/16-bit games, since the scripts aren't particularly wordy. In this case, the author clearly stated his goals, so I do not see it as an issue. I'd approach that script in a different way, but then again everyone has his way of doing things.

Beaten it legitimately, but that event stumped me for a bit as well. As a side note, you can "lose" in this game without dying in some specific situations. Not gonna spoil what happens, but that's something I don't think I've ever seen in any RPGs from that era!

Inserting the script is usually the difficult part, not dumping it (unless it's stored in some odd way, like in CHR ROM for many Culture Brain's games, or when there's compression involved). Besides, this would probably work much better for games with lots of kanji. Think PC-98 and such. This technology has ways to go, but in some decades it may become decent. It would be great if they focused on Japanese translation tools like that, seeing that the vast majority of games requiring translation are made in Japan.

That's an interesting thread! I will name one game per each system I own(ed):
1. Back to the Future 2 & 3 (NES) - the most infuriating game of all by far, IMO near impossible to complete without a guide. While I don't necessarily hate most games published by LJN (I quite liked Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street), this one is easily the worst NES game I bought.
2. Daikatana (Nintendo 64) - bought it waaaay back, around the time when it was released. While I see what they were going for, the execution was really lacking. IMO it was rightfully panned by everyone back then.
3. Drake of the 99 Dragons (XBOX) - the worst XBOX game I ever bought, by a long shot. I recall playing this one during the summer of 2004. The controls and bugs annoyed me so much that I never finished it.
4. Bad Day LA (PC) - was expecting a fun romp in the style of GTA, got a glitchy, buggy mess with poor voice acting. The idea was great, but again, the execution definitely wasn't.
5. The Fifth Element (PSX) - quite liked the movie, and so one of my friends bought this game for me back in the '90s... needless to say, it wasn't the best gift ever, hahah. Bad controls, poor AI, boring level design... wouldn't recommend this one to anyone.

Hmmm, looks like it has lots of VA... it's likely that adding subs won't be an option. If there's no space for subs, dubbing may be the only way. It seems that this is likely (unfortunately) the hardest version to hack, but you should ask elmer, dshadoff or (maybe) cabbage for more info, like Pennywise mentioned. They may know more.

Sword Master perhaps? Might be Astyanax as well, if it's the NES you're talking about. Those two are the ones I can think of with that theme/big characters. This game could also potentially be The Legend of Prince Valiant, Demon Sword or Wizards and Warriors 2 or 3.

That's cool, yeah. In many ways PC-98 games are very different from the Game Gear ports, so those are essentially two different experiences. Also, A-R-S came out for PC-98 only IIRC, and the GG port of A is completely different too. Will be great to have 1-2-3 in both major versions completed!

I can't find it anywhere is it an snes title?

The SNES ports of both 1 and 2 are also translated -> https://www.romhacking.net/translations/2263/. It's probably "the" way to play it as far as gameplay/quality of life improvements go, though I gotta say that I prefer the music/artwork of the original FC games.

Can't wait to check this one out. I love the Shin Megami Tensei games, with 2 being my all time favorite.

How many untranslated games are left on the snes? Is there somewhere where we can find said list?

I'm just waiting on a translation of Tetris Battle Gaiden (on the snes). As that is my favorite game on the SNES that's yet to be translated. And no this is not a translation request.

According to it, 750 SNES games are untranslated still (the most of any retro console), most of them being RPGs, puzzle games, board games and action games, plus a ton of different sports titles.

Do you guys really think they should translate those games?

DDS:MT 1 is translated, you can find the patch on this site. Part 2 isn't, but I believe Tom and Pennywise mentioned they'd tackle it eventually.
When it comes to SNES games, there are still probably dozens of RPGs left, and hundreds of other games, but there's been some great progress lately. It's only a matter of time until all the best games are translated.

Unlikely sadly, the interest for the Megami Tensei remakes for the PSX seem very low.

Also, to my understanding DDS specializes in hacking SFC. PSX is a different system, one that isn't particularly popular with translation hackers either, and I don't know if DDS ever did hacking for it. There's also a PC Megami Tensei game (Giten), but yet again the same issues apply.

I don't think it's on the decline. Lately there have been tons of translations into languages other than English, and the hacking quality has only gone up for the most part. It's just that there is a certain niche for every console, so to speak. For example, there are quite a few homebrews and general improvement hacks for the MD; lots of translations for the Nintendo systems, and so on. Also, there has been some interest in systems which aren't very popular/known in the West, such as PC-98. If I'm not mistaken last year saw the highest number of translations, for example. So, I wouldn't sound the death knell for rom-hacking yet. ;)

Nope, same thing happened with Surging Aura for the Mega Drive, but this one is likely number two on the list. Though I think some Famicom RPGs (Hokuto no Ken 3?) got translated into Spanish too, as of late.

Either way, good to see it done, I'll probably give this one a go! Been interested in this game for a while, and my Spanish is better than my Japanese. Thanks for your hard work guys!

Just wanted to say that it was a great idea to give this translation a new coat of paint! I remember playing the old patch ages ago; probably not that long after its release. In all honesty, quite a few patches from that era (say, 1998-2005) had problems. Hopefully this paves the way for some more retranslations, whenever possible!

Omg! I didn't realize anyone was working on this game. And here I was planning on eventually attempting it after I finish my current project, lol. I'm playing through this game as soon as possible now. I absolutely adored the first one. Thank you guys so much for translating this!

Do you guys plan on translating any of the other games like 3, Doki Doki Vacation, or the Mega Drive stuff?

I think I can answer this question - there are definitely plans to translate the Game Gear games, at the very least, since they're the only console ports of MM 3 and A (Doki Doki Vacation). They also happen to be some of the last untranslated GG RPGs, so we'd like to knock them off the list. Can't tell you how long it's gonna take though, since it depends on a variety of factors, but the plan remains the same regardless.

Is there a chance to see the translation of Madou Monogatari on Mega Drive?

Personally I think it's worth doing, since the story seems to be different, and the battle system also isn't quite the same as in most other ports. There were quite a few versions of the first game, and each one of them seems to be different from the others in some aspects.

Apparently, the 3rd game in the series was changed the most. It would seem that the dungeons are completely different in the GG port, and many plot elements are also different because of that. Then there's the Saturn game, which is a more typical turn-based, party JRPG. PC-98 also had MM: A-R-S, which are the prequels for the three main characters (only A was ported to GG - that being Arle's story). In other words, there's a bit of a kerfuffle with this series. Anyway, still good to see part 2 done. GG sure has been getting some love lately.

I'm just worried about what's going to happen to the huge Game Boy (line), and PSX/PS2 game libraries after NES and SNES fan translation are played out. In some ways I feel like the Final Fantasy series created this hobby by making a huge demand for the NES/SNES titles that weren't localized in the west. Who now is pining for those PlayStation games that were never localized when they were a kid? Game Boy/GBC? Game Boy Advance? PS2? Probably nobody, despite the enormous libraries and number of games that only came out in Japan.

I think you're right about PSX, but I disagree about GB, as there are some translations coming out for it every year pretty much. Even for newer portables, such as DS, there is a decent number of translations. However, I do think it's probably impossible to expect the number of translations for the 32-bit consoles +++ to be as high as in the case of SNES or Genesis, due to their length and greater complexity overall, even if the number of said games is very high. As for the mobiles... I'm not sure, but I have a feeling preservation won't be as easy in this case.

Looks like the translation patch was removed from the base of translations. Why? Weak translation quality is the reason? Well, I completed the game using this patch 2 years ago, and it makes understanding much easier anyway. It's not good, but OK. Other weak translations, like Hoshi wo Miru Hito, are still in the base.

I think that's cause no effort was made to do anything about the Google Translate-y nature of the patch. According to the site rules machine translation can be used if you fix the text afterwards. I recall that not being the case here, so that's probably why it was removed. There are a few patches like that, like the old Villgust NES patch for example. Well, maybe someone will make a better patch someday.

Well, any effort for this one is always welcome.

Hopefully you'll find a translator around here for this game.  I would suggest Tom, but I don't know how he'll be about his time (if I'm not wrong, he's translating Otaku no Seiza (The Constellation Nerdulus) from Famicom, aside his work on Zill O'll from PSP.  Nonetheless he has proven to be THE MAN for the Megaten series too much (best proof is to get all Last Bible games translated).

This ^^^ - Tom is by far the best if you want to get this done really well in terms of quality; you should probably ask him either here on RHDN or via Twitter (he translated the first game also, together with Pennywise). I'm sure he'd love to translate this game as well.
