Aircraft are devastating. You need to supress Enemy Aircraft by parking one of your Fighters or Fighter-Bombers on top of Enemy Airfields to keep them from coming out. Also you can use your Bombers to make Terrain Attacks on Enemy Airfields. If you Destroy an Enemy Airport, all his planes inside at the time will be destroyed as well.
You need to consider terrain effects as well. Any unit that is caught out in Level Ground has no protection at all. Keep your infantry in Woods or Rough or Cities if at all possible. The AD5 Attack Info page on my website has tables showing the amount of protection each terrain type provides.
If Fighters are giving you problems, convert some SdKfz 7 Ground Transports into SdKFz 7/1 Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft Guns. These units mount 4 guns that each fire 4 times, giving you 16 chances to hit an Enemy plane that is strafing your units. The range is limited though, so it will have keep close to the unit(s) it is protecting.
I agree that the StuG III E is worthless. Its Gun accuracy is pitiful, and it cannot hit the broad side of a barn if it tries to move and fire in the same turn. The only thing it can hope to achieve is making a terrain attack on a soft target that it catches in Level Ground. Stick with Pz III H, even though it costs more and is less heavily armored.
I'm working on a User's Manual for the game and will post it shortly.
Good Luck.
