Version 1.3 is out, adding the ability to extract text from the original Japanese version of the game (for the historians among us).

Hm... they changed this line by the old woman in Under Junon:
JORG: 「あのウェポンは倒されたようだけど神羅の兵士が、あと2匹ウェポンがいると言っとったんじゃ」
JINT: 「あのウェポンは倒されたようだけど神羅の兵士が、あと4匹ウェポンがいると言っとったんじゃ」
US: “It seems Weapon was beaten, but a Shinra soldier told me there are 4 more.”

But forgot to also update this one by a soldier in the Junon airport:
JORG+JINT: 「ウェポンの襲撃にはビビッタよな。あんなヤツがまだあと2匹いるかと思うとゾッとするよ」
US: “I sure was frightened when Weapon attacked. It gives me the chills knowing there's still two of them left.”

I've always wondered about the discrepancy.

Rough translation:

Story

A long time ago, there was a peaceful kingdom named Aretha on Arterra.
Two daughters were born to king Riverton of the Aretha kingdom.
Riverton, wishing for the welfare of his daughters, gave them the two rings Gold Cat's Eye and Silver Cat's Eye.
But then the evil king Howard began to assault the happily celebrating Aretha kingdom.
The Gold Dragon who served Howard suddenly appeared during a banquet, coming to steal one of the daughters.
The desperately resisting Riverton and the Aretha army were forced into a bitter battle, and about to be defeated.
Riverton used his last strength to seal the Aretha temple and allow his one remaining daughter to escape.
Now, more than ten years have passed by.

I don't know the game, so the transliterations of proper names may be wrong.

Use Notepad++ and set the encoding to "UTF-8 without BOM".

Make sure that your text files are saved as UTF-8 with no byte-order marks.

Version 1.2 is out which removes the dependency on pycdio, and fixes possible problems with missing padding in the KERNEL.BIN file produced by 'trans'.

Just tried playing this on my Slim PS2, but the game keeps crashing as soon as I enter first battle or open up the status screen.

I uploaded a new version of the patch (v1a) which fixes this issue to the project web page. If you're playing this on an emulator you don't need to re-download the patch as no content has been changed.

I think it makes a good excuse to play this again, and learning some german at the same time.

This translation may not be the best way of learning German as it uses accents, colloquialisms, and regional idioms quite freely (or it may actually be a good way of learning German because of that?).

Cid is the only major character who speaks a "regular" dialect (Berlin region) which has been toned down to bring it closer to standard German in spelling and grammar (for example, it's Arbeeter- instead of Abeeta-, and the typical accusative/dative transposition is only present in idioms). Cid also speaks with a noticeable accent in Japanese (which has been axed in the official translation in favor of an uncalled-for amount of swearwords and non-alphanumeric ASCII characters...), especially when he's agitated, and his character traits (highly self-confident, short-tempered, cranky at times) made a Berlin accent seem like a good match (no offense to Berliners intended ;)). Plus, it has the same ei/aiee vowel shift as the original.

Strong German dialects tend to be hard to read and distracting, even for Germans, so they've only been used for NPCs in a handful of places. The main protagonist, Cloud, speaks standard (colloquial) German.

To be super-precise, all 3 discs are the same except for:
  • the MOVIE directory (some files are on all discs, but the story-related FMVs exist only on their respective CD)
  • the two files in the MINT directory: DISKINFO.CNF/DISKNUM.CNF which the game uses for determining the disc number, and MOVIE_ID.BIN which holds the index to the FMVs in the MOVIE directory
  • the name of the main game executable (SCES_008.69/SCES_108.69/SCES_208.69 for the German PAL version, for example); the contents of these files are identical, though
  • the SYSTEM.CNF file which contains the name of the executable
  • the SNOVA directory which exists only on disc 3, although empty sectors are reserved for it on disc 1 and 2 as well
Also, the game expects most files to start on the same LBN (and have the same size) on all discs; otherwise it may crash during disc changes. So to be on the safe side, if a field is changed on one disc it should also be copied to the other discs as well.

Check the included README, in particular the section "Workflow for translation" near the end.

I can't help with Windows-specific problems, I'm afraid... :-[

Provided that Python is installed in the standard way it shouldn't be necessary to copy the tools (or parts of the tools) anywhere special. Just unzip the archive to your home directory and run the tools from the command prompt, for example:
Code: [Select]
python ff7tools-1.1/untrans --helpor
Code: [Select]
cd ff7tools-1.1
python untrans --help

Version 1.1 is out and adds:
  • support for the English, French, and Spanish PAL releases of the game
  • 'trans' now recalculates the sorting table in the item menu so the "Arrange by name" option works properly when item/weapon/armor/accessory names have been changed

May I ask for what extent this is compatible with Square's other PS1 releases?
To no extent whatsoever. I'd be very surprised if the tools worked with any other games (well, except for the TIM2PNG converter, obviously...).

What else is planned for this mod?  Or is this a final?  Also any plans for a GUI?
Planned features include:
  • add support for the English and French PAL releases of the game
  • add the ability to modify text in the Japanese release (if requested)
  • make it possible to replace files in 'bingz' and 'binlz' archives
Apart from this, the tools do everything I need them to do. ;)
