And it wasn't "translation difficulties" so much as localizing a pop culture reference. (Come on, a Japanese ghost in a medieval fantasy setting? Moaning Myrtle even fits better than Hanako IMHO.)

Maybe they're playing 1st-edition AD&D with the Oriental Adventures book, or whatever it was called. ;)

FWIW, I'm with you.  A good translation should feel like it wasn't translated at all, ideally.

lack of voices
Voices were a (bad) addition to the PS2 port.  Both the English and the Japanese ones were completely off-base.  I couldn't stand playing the PS2 game without turning the voices all the way down.

Now just Ys V is left without a 100% English version, IIRC?
And Origin.

I think it's because hairy, sweaty moobs are gross, but that's just a guess.  >:D
No argument there, I could stand to lose some weight, although I'm quite some way from being that guy Bob in Fight Club.  I'm just saying it's no reason to treat me differently on the internet.

You have to make a few rock opera albums first.

Of course I understand that, but the implication is that the opinion of overweight people matters significantly less than the opinion of those who are not overweight. Why would one choose to single out one particular group to say that their opinion does not count?
I think it's because hairy, sweaty moobs are gross, but that's just a guess.  >:D

In all seriousness, though, I'd ask RedComet, since he was the one who made the comment originally.  I hold all others' opinions in equally low esteem. ;)

Plenty of us aren't like that, sir. It's a little unpleasant to hear the fanbase described in those terms because no matter how much I tell myself I'm one of the few, it still feels like a broad brush with which to tar us all. :(
Realistically speaking, if you genuinely feel that the description does not apply to you, then it should not offend. It very well may apply to a good 99% of the fanbase.

Other than being overweight, may I inquire what other entirely benign status might cause my opinion to become invalid?
I can't speak on anyone's behalf other than my own, but for my part, ultimately, the only opinion that is valid is my own, unless I consciously choose to take those of others into account.  Being a fan of the source material does not entitle one to a say in how the final product turns out.  It does not, in fact, entitle one to even a copy of the final product at all.

The problem here is the fanbase itself. If they're not appeased, they complain. Very, very loudly. You get post after post after post of people bitching about this name's wrong and that name's wrong, and your own satisfaction is thus diminished 'cuz you're busy being pissed at people who just won't shut the hell up and play the damn game already >:(

Well, Gid, it's ultimately your project, and thus, your decision.  But personally, I'd tell 'em to go find a box of rusty nails and offer suggestions on where they can place them.  But that's me.  I personally would never settle for anything less than what I want to see in my projects. And I'm not impugning your integrity (I hope you and I know each other well enough to know that's never been the case).  But I do think you're doing yourself a grave disservice if you're at all unhappy with any part of your work, solely because a bunch of random twits on the internet won't shut up.  If they don't like it, let them play the game in Japanese.  I put it this way in my FAQ on SSRPG:

Quote
Q: What's the English title going to be?
A: "Samurai Shodown: Tales of the Bushido"

Q: Why are you calling it "Samurai Shodown" instead of "Samurai Spirits?"
A: Because the name of the series is "Samurai Shodown" outside of Japan. The translated name of this game will reflect that.

Q: But isn't "Samurai Spirits RPG" the actual title of the game?
A: No, the original title is "Shinsetsu Samurai Spirits: Bushidou Retsuden." This translates more or less to "A new take on Samurai Spirits: A set of bushido stories."

Q: How accurate is the translation going to be?
A: This patch is going to be done up properly. The only Romaji you're going to see is for proper names, like for people and places, and words that have been appropriated into English, like samurai, katana and dojo. Movenames will be translated to English. You will not see any uses of Japanese honorifics. No -chan, -kun, -sama or any of that. No, I will not change my mind on this, and no, I will not do an alternate version.

Q: But it's not accurate if it's not full of Japanese words!
A: Then play it without the patch.  I'm not interested in catering to obsessive fanboys.

Ultimately, they can take it or leave it.  But if you're doing it for any reason other than your own satisfaction, then you're doing it for the wrong reason.

Just don´t, you know, complain. And I know some of you are GOING to. We went with canon wherever possible.
We've had this thread before (Camille/Kamiyu.) Time to track down SRWA and SRWAG.  ;)

Personally, in a case like that, I'd offer a rude gesture to anyone insisting on Romaji.  Berusaiyu = Versailles, too. ;P

Never understood the whole "gotta please the fanbase" thing when it comes to translating.  If you're not doing it for (and to) your own satisfaction, then what's the point?

You know, Capcom's managed to sour me on pretty much the entire Mega Man franchise (in all its iterations), but I must admit, I'm very curious to see how this hack will turn out.

Hey, I translated Lady Stalker. >:(

Don't get me wrong.  I'm not taking anything away from anything you've contributed.  I've just been waiting almost two years (February 2007, Gid...!) for him to get back around to Ys V since I gave him the completed script.  Just expressing my SEARING FURY THAT WILL PURGE THE HEAVENS AND EARTH ALIKE WITH ITS CLEANSING FLA--err, mild annoyance.

Well, you can take my word for it... it won't be Ys V...  :banghead:

I swear, I'm going to have to go hurt that boy if he doesn't get that menu system fixed so I can test my script.

I have to say, once again, I don't care for Mario ("loathe" and "despise" are probably more apt words, honestly), but the stuff you're making the original SMB engine do is nothing short of amazing.  Bravissimo, sir.

Out of curiosity (and please forgive if this has been answered already), but do you still expect this should work on real hardware?

If you need help, feel free to ask.  By proxy, you made a huge difference in the SSRPG patch, so I owe you one.

EDIT: Also... "Ishidan" is most likely "group of doctors."  So maybe "Medics."  "Gurukahei" I'm a little less certain of.  "Kahei" means a small military force.  Battalion, regiment, whichever.  The "guru" in front of it is a little odd.  On its own, it could mean "accomplice" or "cohort."  So maybe "Support Troops"?  Just an idea.

Here's one instance where I think a little creative license must be taken to preserve the spirit, not the letter, of the original Japanese.  While the two Kanji that make up "zantetsu" do mean "cut" and "iron" on their own, they collectively mean "iron-cleaving."  So yes, "Zantetsuken" does mean "blade which cuts through iron."  Certainly clunkier in English than Japanese, but a little thought put into it can convey the same kind of meaning with a little pizzazz.  For instance, the aforementioned "Holy Dragon Sword" is indeed a mouthful... the first thing that pops into my head is "Sacred Wyrmblade" (wyrm, of course, being a common literary term in reference to dragons).

How about, instead of "Zantetsuken," you use something like "Steelrender"?  Most swords of notoriety tend to have their own names, a la Narsil, Hrunting, Excalibur, etc.

I have to interject here... I hate Mario with a blazing passion, and I'm impressed enough with the quality I see of this hack to actually be interested in trying it.

If you know me at all, you know that's insanely high praise. :)

Yep, it's from Dark Arms.  The game is actually based on two rather obscure lightgun arcade games.  Beast Busters 2 was one of the seven games released for the Hyper Neogeo 64.
